क्षिप्रं विजानाति चिरं... -विदुर नीति

क्षिप्रं विजानाति चिरं शृणोति
विज्ञाय चार्थं भजते न कामात |
ना संपृष्टो व्युपयुङ्क्ते परार्थे
तत् प्रज्ञानं प्रथमं पण्डितस्य ||

-विदुर नीति

भावार्थ = जो व्यक्ति उस से कही हुई किसी बात को
यद्यपि शीघ्र समझ लेता हो परन्तु उसे देर तक सुनने
का धैर्य भी उसमे हो , तथा उस व्यक्ति का मन्तव्य जान
कर बिना किसी कामना के उसका आदर करता हो , और
न ही जान बूझ कर उसकी संपत्ति को अपने अधिकार में
लेने के उद्देश्य से उस से बातचीत करता हो, ये सभी प्रमुख
लक्षण एक विद्वान व्यक्ति के होते हैं

Kshipram vijaanaati chiram shrunoti,
Vigyaaya chaartham bhajate na kaamaat.
Naa smprushto vyupayunkte paraarthe.
Tat pragyaanam prathamam panditasya.

Kshipram = speedily. Vijaanaati = understands.
Chiram = lasting a long time. Shrunoti = listens.,
hears. Vigyaaya = after understanding. Cha +
artham. Cha = and. Artham = true sense.
Bhajate = revers, shows respect. Na = not .
Kaamaat = intentionally. Naa =not. Smprushto=
enquire about. vi+ upayunkte . Vi = prefix.
Upayunkte = appropriates, takes possession.
Paraarthe = wealth of others. Tat= that.
Praagyaanam = distinctive mark. Prathamam=
first., foremost. Panditasya = of a learned person.

A person who quickly understands the purport
of the subject of another person's talk to him , but has
also the patience of listening to him for a long time,and
gives due respect to him without an ulterior motive, and
does not talk with him to appropriate his wealth, all these
are the foremost distinctive marks of a learned person.
