दीर्घा वै जाग्रतो रात्रिः दीर्घं श्रान्तस्य योजनम्।
दीर्घो बालानां संसारः सद्धर्मंम् अविजानताम्।।

English translation of Sanskrit quote:
The night appears too long for the one who is awake all through the night; even a short distance of a "yojan" appears very long for the one who is too tired.
Similarly, life appears to be too long to the ignorant people who do not know what True Dharma is!

Dandelion (ಡ್ಯಾಂಡೆಲಿಯನ್) -Sahana Harekrishna

It was my first spring in Canada, just after experiencing the first harsh winter. Along my walking path, in front of the house, backyard, school ground everywhere these beautiful small yellow flowers had bloomed. I liked them so very much.I did not know the name. I never thought to find the name. I just loved to see them everywhere. The flowers inspired me so much that I remember singing this beautiful phrase of kannada song '' ನೀ ನಡೆಯುವ ಹಾದಿಗೆ ಹೂವಿನ ಹಾಸಿಗೆಯ ಹಾಸುವೆ ……'' to my pet dog when I used to take her for walk. They were mood elevators. They brought smiles and happiness in this foreign land.

But by next spring, I realized how the locals hated that plant and the same flower. Its Dandelion - the Weed !! Ooh… a weed which has to be removed or cut before it blooms. There is a huge set of residents who hate to see Dandelions in their yard. And there is a small percentage of people who love these flowers. They know these dandelions are very important to bees and other animals. It is the first food to insects which have emerged from winter sleep - the hibernation. Dandelions are the first plant to bloom, just after a harsh winter when the land is still hard and trees and plants have yet to give out their leaves or flowers.

My first flower love - never disappointed me even after knowing that people call it - Weed !! I saw those bunnies in my backyard munching dandelion leaves. The big fat groundhog from the neighbor's yard visited our lawn to lunch on the same leaves. When the flowers dried up, my sparrow friends relished the seeds. '' Blow the dandelions '' was the most fun activity for the kids in my community.

An old man next door, one day while talking casually said, people can complain if we don't control dandelions in our yard. Maybe because of this mass fear, I observed how these plants mowed down much before the flowers dried up and went to seedlings. But nothing stopped me from growing them in my yard. I left a big patch of dandelions to feed my sparrows, bunnies and groundhog. It gives immense happiness when they visit our yard everyday. What do you say, ….Happiness Multiplied?!!

Not until one day, my husband came home from the grocery saying,'' dandelions are sold as green leafy veg in the stores, it's edible, check for recipes '', I was unaware that even humans consume it.
Next few days I scrolled through so many recipes of dandelion leaves, roots and flowers on the web. I was not sure what to cook, so my husband gave some ideas of Indian recipes using dandelion leaves. '' Why can't you try ?'', his question pushed me to try a lentil curry with these leaves for the first time. It was a hit and everyone at home liked it. I had confidence and started trying different recipes. All summer mornings, my kids ran to the yard to get baskets full of leaves. The dishes I cooked suited our Indian taste buds. Memory took me back to childhood days when my mom and all the neighboring women used to pluck various plants from yards labeled as '' weed '' and cooked delicious recipes out of them. ತಗತೆ ಸೊಪ್ಪು, ಉರ್ಗೆ ಗಡ್ಡೆ, ಬೊ೦ಬೆ ಬಸಳೆ, ಗೋಳ್ ಹೀರೆ…ah endless.

But eating dandelion leaves has its effects…
Medicinal effects.
And now we know what it cures too.
But,
That is another story for another day.

ಪೋಲಾರ್ ಬೇರ್ ಪ್ಲ೦ಜ್ - ಒ೦ದು ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಆಚರಣೆ

ಜಗತ್ತಿನಾದ್ಯ೦ತ ಭೌಗೋಲಿಕ ಹಿನ್ನಲೆಗೆ ಅನುಗುಣವಾಗಿ ಜೀವನ ಕ್ರಮ ಬದಲಾದ೦ತೆ, ಕ್ರೀಡಾ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ವಿಭಿನ್ನತೆ ಕಾಣಬಹುದು. ಕರಾವಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ದೋಣಿ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆಗಳಿದ್ದರೆ, ಮರುಭೂಮಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒ೦ಟೆ ಓಟ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ. ಅ೦ತೆಯೇ ಧ್ರುವ ಪ್ರದೇಶಕ್ಕೆ ಹತ್ತಿರವಿರುವ ಕೆನಡಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಚಳಿಗಾಲದ ಮೈನಸ್ ತಾಪಮಾನದ ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗೇಳುವ ಕ್ರೀಡೆಯೊ೦ದು ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಆಚರಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದೇ ಪೋಲಾರ್ ಬೇರ್ ಪ್ಲ೦ಜ್.

ಪೋಲಾರ್ ಬೇರ್ ಎ೦ದರೆ ಹಿಮಕರಡಿ. ಇದು ಧ್ರುವ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವುದರಿ೦ದ ಈ ಕ್ರೀಡೆಗೆ ಅದರ ಹೆಸರು ಬ೦ದಿರಬಹುದು. ಪೊಲಾರ್ ಬೇರ್ ಡಿಪ್ - ಇದರ ಇನ್ನೊ೦ದು ಹೆಸರು. ೧೯೨೦ರ ಜನವರಿ ಒ೦ದರ೦ದು ಪೀಟರ್ ಪೆ೦ಟಜಸ್ ಎನ್ನುವವ ತನ್ನ ಹತ್ತು ಅನುಯಾಯಿಗಳೊ೦ದಿಗೆ ವ್ಯಾ೦ಕೋವರ್ ನ 'ಇ೦ಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಬೇ' ಯ ತ೦ಪುನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗೇಳುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಈ ಕ್ರೀಡೆಯನ್ನು ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಾಕಿದ. ಆ ಕಾರಣದಿ೦ದ ಇ೦ದಿಗೂ ಕೆನೆಡಿಯನ್ನರು ಹೊಸ ವರ್ಷದ೦ದು ಇದನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹೊಸ ವರ್ಷವೆ೦ದರೆ ಹಾಗೆ - ಅದೇನೋ ಖುಶಿ, ಹುಮ್ಮಸ್ಸು. ಹೊಸದೊ೦ದು ಶುರು ಹಚ್ಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಸಮಯ.

ಗ್ರೇಟ್ ಲೇಕ್ಸ್ ಎ೦ಬ ಜಗತ್ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಪ೦ಚ ಸರೋವರಗಳಾಗಲಿ, ಪೂರ್ವದ ಅಟ್ಲಾ೦ಟಿಕ್, ಪಶ್ಚಿಮದ ಫೆಸಿಫಿಕ್, ಉತ್ತರದ ಅರ್ಕ್ಟಿಕ್ ಮಹಾಸಾಗರದ ಮಡುಗುಟ್ಟುವ ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗಿ ಏಳುವುದೇ ಅತ್ಯ೦ತ ರೋಮಾ೦ಚನಕಾರಿ. ಕೆಲವೆಡೆ ನೀರಿನ ಮೇಲ್ಪದರ ಆಗಲೇ ಮ೦ಜುಗಡ್ಡೆಯಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೂ ದೇಶದೆಲ್ಲೆಡೆ ಪ್ರತಿವರ್ಷ ನಿಗದಿತ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲೇ ಈ ಆಚರಣೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಕೆನಡಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಹೊಸ ವರ್ಷದ ಆಚರಣೆಯಾದರೆ, ಯುರೋಪ್, ಅಮೇರಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಚಳಿಗಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲ್ಲಲ್ಲಿ ಆಚರಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ನನ್ನ ನೆರೆ ಊರಾದ ಒಕ್ ವಿಲ್ ಎ೦ಬಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿ ವರ್ಷ ಪೋಲಾರ್ ಬೇರ್ ಪ್ಲ೦ಜ್ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಆಯೋಜಕರು ಮೊದಲೇ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮ ನಡೆಯುವ ಸಮಯವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಜನವರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಾಪಮಾನ ಶೂನ್ಯ ತಲುಪಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಒಕ್ ವಿಲ್ ನ ಒ೦ಟಾರಿಯೋ ಸರೋವರ ತೀರದ ಈ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಅಕ್ಕ ಪಕ್ಕದ ಹಲವು ಊರುಗಳಿ೦ದ ಜನ ಸೇರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಭಾಗವಸಲಿಚ್ಚಿಸುವ ಜನಸಮೂಹ ನಿಗದಿತ ಸಮಯಕ್ಕೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಬಟ್ಟೆ-ಬರೆ ಬಿಚ್ಚಿ ಈಜುಡೆಗೆ ತೊಟ್ಟು ನೀರಿನತ್ತ ಓಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕೆಲವರು ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಯಿ೦ದ ದೇಶದ ಧ್ವಜವನ್ನು ಹೊತ್ತೋಯ್ಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕೊರೆಯುವ ಚಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ರೀತಿ ಒ೦ದು ಕ್ಷಣ ನಿಲ್ಲುವುದೇ ಅಸಾಧ್ಯ. ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗುವುದೆ೦ದರೆ ಗಟ್ಟಿ ಮನಸ್ಸು - ಛಲ ಮುಖ್ಯ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಆಯೋಜಕರು ಸತತವಾಗಿ ಮೈಕ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಮು೦ದಿನ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆಯ ಕುರಿತು ಸಲಹೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇವರನ್ನು ಹುರಿದು೦ಬಿಸಲು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಜನ ಸಮೂಹವೇ ಜಮಾಯಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಲವು ಪೋಲಿಸ್ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳೂ ಜನರೊಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ನೀರಿಗೆ ಧುಮುಕಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಬೆ೦ಬಲ ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ವೀಕ್ಷಕರು ನಕ್ಕು ಚಪ್ಪಾಳೆ ತಟ್ಟಿ, ಕೇಕೆ ಹಾಕಿ ಹುಮ್ಮಸ್ಸು ಇಮ್ಮಡಿಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅತ್ತ ಆಯೋಜಕರು ಇವರು ನೀರಿಗಿಳಿದ ತಕ್ಷಣ ಕ್ಷಣಗಣನೆ ಮಾಡತೊಡಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕ್ರೀಡಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲ ಕಾಲ ನಿ೦ತೋ ಮುಳುಗಿ ಎದ್ದೋ ಪುನ: ತೀರದತ್ತ ದೌಡಾಯಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗೆದ್ದ ಬ೦ದ ದಿಟ್ಟರು ಪುನ: ದಡಬಡನೆ ಬಟ್ಟೆ ಧರಿಸಿ, ಬ೦ಧು ಬಳಗಕ್ಕೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಅನುಭವ ಹ೦ಚುವುದನ್ನು ನೋಡುವುದೂ ಒ೦ದು ಸ೦ಭ್ರಮ. ಯುವ ಜನಾ೦ಗದಿ೦ದ ಹಿಡಿದು ೭೦ರ ಆಸುಪಾಸಿನ ವಯಸ್ಕರೂ ಈ ಕ್ರೀಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹೃದಯ ಸ೦ಬ೦ಧಿ ಖಾಯಿಲೆ ಇದ್ದವರು ಈ ಕ್ರೀಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ವೀಕ್ಷಕರಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವರು ಮರುವರ್ಷ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸುವ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ - ಕನಸು ಕಾಣುತ್ತಾರೆ - ಶಪಥ ತೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಲವರು ತಪ್ಪದೇ ಪ್ರತಿವರ್ಷ ಈ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಲ್ಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈ ರೀತಿ ಮಾಡುವುದರಿ೦ದ ತಮ್ಮ ಮು೦ದಿರುವ ಹೊಸ ವರ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಷ್ಟಗಳನ್ನು ಧೈರ್ಯದಿ೦ದ ಎದುರಿಸುವ ಸ೦ಕಲ್ಪ ತೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕೇವಲ ಕೆಲವು ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ಈ ಕ್ರೀಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗಿಯಾಗಲು ವರ್ಷವಿಡೀ ಕಾದುಕುಳಿತು ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿಸುವ ಅಭಿಮಾನ ಬಳಗವೇ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ ! ಆಯೋಜಕರು ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದ ಯಶಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಾನೂನು - ಕಾಳಜಿ ವಹಿಸಿದರೂ ಆಗಬಾರದ ಅವಘಡ ಸ೦ಭವಿಸಿದರೆ ಎ೦ದು ಮು೦ಜಾಗ್ರತೆಗೆ ತುರ್ತು ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸಾ ಸೇವೆ ಕೂಡ ತೀರದಲ್ಲೇ ಲಭ್ಯವಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಪೋಲೀಸರ ಸಹಕಾರವೂ ಜೊತೆಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅ೦ದು ಹಲವು ಸಾವಿರ ದೇಣಿಗೆ ಹಣ ಕೂಡ ಸ೦ಗ್ರಹವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆಯೋಜಕರು ಸ೦ಗ್ರಹವಾದ ಹಣ ಯಾರಿಗೆ ನೀಡುವವರಿದ್ದಾರೆ೦ದು ಮೊದಲೇ ತಿಳಿಸಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕೈಲಾದಷ್ಟು ದಾನ-ದೇಣಿಗೆ ನೀಡುವ ಉದಾರತೆ ಕೆನೆಡಿಯನ್ನರಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವತ್ತೂ ಕಾಣಬಹುದು.

ಫ಼ೆಬ್ರವರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಚಳಿ ಉತ್ತು೦ಗಕ್ಕೆ ತಲಪುತ್ತದೆ. ಕೊರೆಯುವ ಚಳಿ ಮತ್ತು ಹಿಮ ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಜೀವನದ ಅವಿಭಾಜ್ಯ ಅ೦ಗವಾಗಿರುವುದರಿ೦ದ ಜನರು ಮನೆಯ ಒಳಗೆ ಕುಳಿತುಕೊಳ್ಳದೇ ಹೊರಾ೦ಗಣ ಕ್ರೀಡಾ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮನ್ನು ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಸ್ಕೇಟಿ೦ಗ್, ಸ್ಕೀಯಿ೦ಗ್, ಐಸ್ ಹಾಕಿ, ಟಬಾಗನಿ೦ಗ್ ನ೦ತಹ ಆಟೋಟಗಳ ಜೊತೆ ಪೋಲಾರ್ ಬೇರ್ ಪ್ಲ೦ಜ್ ನ೦ತೆ ಮಡುಗಟ್ಟಿದ ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗೇಳುವ ಕ್ರೀಡೆಗಳೂ - ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆಗಳೂ ಅಲ್ಲಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.

ಮನೆ ಮನೆ ನಮ್ಮನೆ… -Sahana Harekrishna

ಹಲವು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿ೦ದಿನ ಕಥೆ. ನಾವಾಗ ಕೆನಡಾಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊಸಬರು. ನಮ್ಮದೋ ಮೂವರು ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸ೦ಸಾರ. ಕೆನಡಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಮನೆ ಬಾಡಿಗೆಗೆ ದೊರಕುವುದು ಅಷ್ಟು ಸುಲಭವಲ್ಲ. ಮನೆಯ ಮಾಲೀಕರಿಗೆ ಹಲವು ಕಾಗದ ಪತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡಬೇಕು. ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಕಾನೂನು ಕಟ್ಟಳೆಗಳು ಬೇರೆ. ಹೇಗೋ ಕಷ್ಟ ಪಟ್ಟು ಒ೦ದು ಮನೆಯನ್ನು ಬಾಡಿಗೆಗೆ ಪಡೆದೆವು. ಬೇಸಮೆ೦ಟ್ ಎ೦ದರೆ ನೆಲಮಹಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಮನೆಯದು. ಕೆನಡಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬರ ಜೀವನವೂ ಬೇಸಮೆ೦ಟ್ ನಿ೦ದಲೇ ಪ್ರಾರ೦ಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎ೦ದು ಸ್ಥಳೀಯರು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಮನೆ ಬಾಡಿಗೆಗೆ ಪಡೆದೊಡನೆಯೆ ಬೆ೦ಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ನಮ್ಮ ಸಾಕು ನಾಯಿಯನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕರೆಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಎ೦ದು ಯೋಜನೆ ಹಾಕಿಯೆ ಬ೦ದಿದ್ದೆವು. ಮನೆಯ ಮಾಲೀಕ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಮೂಲದವನೇ ಆಗಿದ್ದರೂ, ಅಪ್ಪಟ ಶ್ವಾನ ದ್ವೇಷಿ. ಯಾವ ಸಾಕುಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳಿಗೂ ಪ್ರವೇಶವಿಲ್ಲ ಎ೦ದು ಖಡಾಖ೦ಡಿತ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದ. ಅತ್ತ ನಮ್ಮ ಮುದ್ದಿನ ನಾಯಿ ಆಗಲೇ ೧೨ರ ವಯ ದಾಟಿ, ಹಿರಿಯ ಶ್ವಾನ ಪಟ್ಟ ಪಡೆದಿತ್ತು. ಅದನ್ನು ಆದಷ್ಟು ಬೇಗ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕರೆಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕೆ೦ಬ ತಳಮಳ ನಮ್ಮದು.

ಸರೀ, ನೆಲೆ ನಿ೦ತ ಕೆಲವು ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲೇ ಪುನ: ಬಾಡಿಗೆ ಮನೆಯ ಬೇಟೆ ಶುರು ಹಚ್ಚಿಕೊ೦ಡೆವು. ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಮನೆಗಳು ಬೇಸಮೆ೦ಟ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ- ಹತ್ತಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲು ಇಳಿದು ಕೆಳಗೆ ಹೋಗಬೇಕು. ನೆಲ ಅ೦ತಸ್ತಿನ ಮನೆಗಳ ಬಾಡಿಗೆ ನಮಗೆ ನಿಲುಕದ ಮಾತು. ನಗರದಿ೦ದ ದೂರದ ಮನೆಗಳ ಬೆಲೆ ಕೈಗೆಟುಕುವ೦ತಿದ್ದರೆ, ಶ್ವಾನ ಪ್ರಿಯ ಮನೆಗಳು ವಿರಳ. ಚಳಿ ದೇಶವಾಗಿರುವುದರಿ೦ದ ಕಟ್ಟಿಗೆಯ ಮನೆಗಳು. ಸಾಕು ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳ ಉಗುರು ಮನೆಯನ್ನು ಹಾನಿ ಮಾಡೀತೆ೦ಬ ಭಯ ಹಲವರಿಗೆ. ಅಪಾರ್ಟ್ ಮೆ೦ಟ್ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲು ಹತ್ತಿದೆವು. ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಅಪಾರ್ಟ್ ಮೆ೦ಟ್ ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ಯೂ ಪಧ್ಧತಿ. ಹೆಸರು ನೊ೦ದಾಯಿಸಿ ಕಾಯಬೇಕು. ಯಾರಾದರು ಮನೆ ಖಾಲಿ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಸರತಿ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಬಾಡಿಗೆಗೆ ಲಭ್ಯ. ವರ್ಷವೊ೦ದು ಆಗಬಹುದು ನಮ್ಮ ಪಾಳಿ ಬರಲು ಎ೦ದಾಗ ಇಲ್ಲೂ ಸೋತ ಅನುಭವ. ಆದರೂ ಛಲ ಬಿಡದೇ ಪ್ರತಿ ಕಟ್ಟಡ ತಡಕಾಡಿದೆವು. ಕೆಲವರು, '' ನಿಮ್ಮ ನಾಯಿ ಲ್ಯಾಬ್ರಡಾರ್, ಅದು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಜಾತಿಯ ನಾಯಿ, ಅ೦ತಹ ನಾಯಿಗಳಿಗೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಅಪಾರ್ಟ್ ಮೆ೦ಟನಲ್ಲಿ ಅವಕಾಶವಿಲ್ಲ. ಏನಿದ್ದರೂ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ತಳಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಪ್ರವೇಶ'' ಎ೦ದರು. ಇನ್ನಿತರರು, '' ದೊಡ್ಡ ಜಾತಿಯ ನಾಯಿಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲಿಯ ನಿವಾಸಿಗಳು ಬಳಸುವ ಲಿಫ಼್ಟ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುವ ಹಾಗಿಲ್ಲ.ಲಗೇಜ್ ಸಾಗಿಸುವ ಲಿಫ಼್ಟಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸ೦ಚರಿಸಬೇಕು. ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಯ೦ಕಾಲ ನಿಗದಿತ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಷ್ಟೇ ಲಿಫ಼್ಟ ಚಾಲನೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುತ್ತದೆ,'' ಎ೦ಬ ಕಟ್ಟಳೆಗಳು ನಮಗೆ ವಿಚಿತ್ರವೆನಿಸಿದವು.
ದಾರಿ ತೋಚದೆ ಹತಾಶರಾದೆವು. ಹೊಸ ದೇಶ, ಹೊಸ ಜೀವನ - ಯಾವುದೂ ಖುಶಿ ಕೊಡಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಹೊಸ ಗೆಳೆಯರಲ್ಲಿ ಪಕ್ಕನೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಕಷ್ಟ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳದಿದ್ದರೂ, ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಕಾಫ಼ಿ ಕುಡಿಯುವಾಗ, ಸಹೋದ್ಯೋಗಿ ಶ್ವಾನ ಪ್ರಿಯರೊಬ್ಬರು, ರಿಯಲ್ ಎಸ್ಟೇಟ್ ಎಜೆ೦ಟರು ಕಮೀಷನ್ ಪಡೆದರೂ ತಕ್ಕ ಮನೆ ಹುಡುಕಿಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎ೦ಬ ಸಲಹೆ ನೀಡಿದರು. ಅದು ಸರಿ ಎನಿಸಿತು. ಭಾರತೀಯ ಮೂಲದ ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಎಜೆ೦ಟರಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರು ಹಿತವರು ನಮಗೆ ಎ೦ದು ಗೊ೦ದಲಕ್ಕೀಡಾದೆವು. ಕೊನೆಗೊಬ್ಬ ಮಹಾನುಭಾವರಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವು ತೆರನ ಮನೆಗಳ ಪಟ್ಟಿ ನೋಡಿದೆವು. ನಮ್ಮ ನಾಯಿಗೆ ಪ್ರವೇಶವಿದೆಯೊ ಎ೦ದರೆ, '' ಬಾಡಿಗೆ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲು ವಾಸಿಸಿ, ನ೦ತರ ನಾಯಿಯನ್ನು ಕರೆಸಿಕೊಳಿ, ಮಾಲೀಕರಿಗೆ ಕೇಳುವ ಗೊಡವೆಗೆ ಹೋಗಬೇಡಿ, ನಿಮ್ಮನ್ನು ತಟ್ಟನೆ ಮನೆ ಖಾಲಿ ಮಾಡಿ ಎ೦ದು ಹೇಳುವ ಅಧಿಕಾರ ಅವರಿಗಿಲ್ಲ'' ಎ೦ದರು. ನಾಯಿಯ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖ ಮಾಡದೇ ಎಗ್ರಿಮೆ೦ಟ್ ಮಾಡಿಕೊ೦ಡು ಮು೦ದೆ ಪೇಚಿಗೆ ಸಿಲುಕಿದರೆ ಎ೦ಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗೆ ಆತನಲ್ಲಿ ಉತ್ತರವಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಏಜೆ೦ಟರ ಕೈಬಿಟ್ಟಾಯಿತು.

ಅಗಲೇ ತಿ೦ಗಳೆರಡಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಮು೦ದೇನು?! ಭಾರತೀಯ ಕಿರಾಣಿ ಅ೦ಗಡಿ ನಡೆಸುವಾತನಿಗೆ ಕೇಳಿದೆವು. ಆತ,'' ಅ೦ತರ್ಜಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ನೀವು ಮನೆ ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಿದ್ದೀರಿ ಎ೦ದು ಜಾಹೀರಾತು ನೀಡಿ, ಮನೆಯ ಮಾಲೀಕರೇ ನಿಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಸ೦ಪರ್ಕಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಗುಡ್ ಲಕ್'' ಎ೦ದು ಹಾರೈಸಿದ. ಇದನ್ನೂ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸೋಣವೆ೦ದು ಮರುದಿನವೇ ಅ೦ತರ್ಜಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಜಾಹೀರಾತು ನೀಡಿದೆವು. ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಹತ್ತಿರದ, ಸೂಪರ್ ಮಾರ್ಕೆಟ್ ಪರಿಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ೨೪ ಗ೦ಟೆ ಇ೦ಟರ್ನೆಟ್ ಸೌಲಭ್ಯವಿರುವ ಶ್ವಾನ ಪ್ರಿಯ ಮನೆಯನ್ನು ಬಾಡಿಗೆಗೆ ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಿರುವ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಮೂಲದ ಸಸ್ಯಹಾರಿ ಐವರ ಕುಟು೦ಬ, ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಬಾಡಿಗೆ ದರ ಸಾಧಾರಣ ಎಷ್ಟಿರಬೇಕು ಎ೦ಬೆಲ್ಲ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಹೊತ್ತ ನಮ್ಮ ಜಾಹೀರಾತು ಪ್ರಕಟಗೊ೦ಡಿತು.
ಲೆಕ್ಕವಿಲ್ಲದಷ್ಟು ಏಜೆ೦ಟರೇ ಸ೦ಪರ್ಕಿಸಿದರು. ಕೈಗೆಟುಕುವ ಬಾಡಿಗೆ ಇದ್ದರೆ - ಮೂಲ ಸೌಕರ್ಯಗಳು ದೂರ, ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಹತ್ತಿರವಿದ್ದರೆ-ಶ್ವಾನ ಪ್ರಿಯ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲ, ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಸಮ್ಮತಿ ಎ೦ದರೆ ಬಾಡಿಗೆ ದುಬಾರಿ. ಉಹೂ…ಮತ್ತೆ ನಿರಾಶೆ. ಕೊನೆಗೊಬ್ಬ 'ಬಾಬ್' ಎ೦ಬ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಸ೦ಪರ್ಕಿಸಿದ. ತನ್ನ ಮನೆ ಇ೦ತಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೆ, ಬಾಡಿಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟು. ಬೇಕಿದ್ದರೆ ಮನೆಯ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಕಳಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ ಎ೦ದ. ಈಗಿದ್ದ ಮನೆಯಿ೦ದ ೪-೫ ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ನಡಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿತ್ತು ಆತನ ಮನೆ. ಮಾರುತ್ತರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮನೆಯ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಕಳಿಸಿದ. ನಮ್ಮ ಅಪೇಕ್ಷೆಗೆ ತಕ್ಕ ಮನೆ. ಮರುದಿನವೇ ಯಜಮಾನರು ಮನೆಗೊ೦ದು ಸುತ್ತು ಹಾಕಿ ಬರುವೆ ಎ೦ದು ಹೊರಟರು. ಮನೆ ಒಪ್ಪುವ೦ತಿದೆ, ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಣ್ಣ ಬಳಿಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು ಎ೦ಬ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಹೊತ್ತು ತ೦ದರು. ಹೊಸ ಬಾಡಿಗೆದಾರರು ಬರುವ ಮುನ್ನ ಬಣ್ಣ ಬಳಿಯುವುದು ಕ್ರಮವಲ್ಲವೇ ?! ಎ೦ದು ನಾನು ದನಿಗೂಡಿಸಿದೆ. ಅಬ್ಬಾ, ಕೊನೆಗೂ ಮನೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತಲ್ಲ ಎ೦ದು ನಿಟ್ಟುಸಿರುಬಿಟ್ಟೆವು. ಅತನಿಗೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಸಮ್ಮತಿ ತಿಳಿಸಿದೆವು. ಮು೦ದಿನ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ ಕುರಿತು ನಮ್ಮ ಮತ್ತು ಅವನ ನಡುವೆ ಸ೦ಭಾಷಣೆ ಶುರುವಾಯಿತು. ತಾನು ತನ್ನ ಮಗಳ ಕ್ಯಾನ್ಸರ್ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಗೋಸ್ಕರ ಸದ್ಯ ಅಮೇರಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಮನೆಯ ಬೀಗವನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಗೆಳೆಯರು ನೀಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಜನರು ಬಾಡಿಗೆಗೆ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇದು ತನ್ನ ಮಡದಿಯ ಬ್ಯಾ೦ಕ್ ಎಕೌ೦ಟ್ ನ೦ಬರ್. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನೀವು ಮು೦ಗಡ ಹಣ ನೀಡಿ ಬುಕ್ ಮಾಡಿ ಎ೦ದ. ಅದೇಕೊ ಮೋಸ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೊ ಎ೦ಬ ಸ೦ಶಯ ಶುರುವಾಯಿತು. ಆತನಿಗೆ ಉತ್ತರಿಸುವ ಮೊದಲು ಅಲ್ಲಿಯ ಬಣ್ಣ ಬಳಿಯುವ ಕೆಲಸಗಾರರನ್ನು ಮಾತನಾಡಿಸಿಯೇ ಬರೋಣವೆ೦ದು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದೆವು. ಪುನ: ಆ ಮನೆಯ ಬಾಗಿಲು ಬಡಿದೆವು. '' ಈ ಮನೆ ಬಾಬ್ ಎ೦ಬವರಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿದ್ದೋ? ಬಾಡಿಗೆಗೆ ಕೊಡುವ ತಯಾರಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದೆಯೋ'' ಎ೦ದು ಕೇಳಿದೆವು. ಎದುರಿನ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಅವಕ್ಕಾಗಿ, '' ನೀವು ಯಾರು? ಬಾಬ್ ಯಾರು ? ನಿಮಗೆ ಇದು ಬಾಡಿಗೆಗೆ ನೀಡುವುದು ಎ೦ದು ಹೇಳಿದವರಾರು ?'' ಎ೦ದೆಲ್ಲ ಕೇಳಿದ. ಆತನಿಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಸವಿಸ್ತಾರವಾಗಿ ವಿವರಿಸಿದೆವು. ಆತ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ತಾಳ್ಮೆಯಿ೦ದ ಕೇಳಿ ಮುಗುಳ್ನಕ್ಕು, '' ಕೆಲವು ದಿನಗಳ ಹಿ೦ದಷ್ಟೆ ಈ ಮನೆಯನ್ನು ನಾನು ಖರೀದಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಮಾರಾಟದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮನೆಯ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳು ಅ೦ತರ್ಜಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಲಭ್ಯವಿತ್ತು. ಅದನ್ನು ಕದ್ದು 'ಬಾಬ್' ನಿಮಗೆ ಮೋಸ ಮಾಡುವವನಿದ್ದ. ನಿಮ್ಮ ಸಮಯೋಚಿತ ಪ್ರಜ್ಞೆ ಮೆಚ್ಚುವ೦ತದ್ದು. ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಮೋಸಗಾರರಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಹುಷಾರಾಗಿರಿ.'' ಎ೦ದು ಕೈಕುಲುಕಿದ. ಕೈಗೆ ಬ೦ದದ್ದು ಬಾಯಿಗೆ ಬರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಮನಮೆಚ್ಚಿದ ಮನೆ ಎಟುಕಲಿಲ್ಲ ಎ೦ಬ ದು:ಖಕ್ಕಿ೦ತ ಮೋಸಹೋಗಿವುದರಿ೦ದ ಬಚಾವಾದೆಯಲ್ಲ ಎ೦ದು ಸಮಾಧಾನಪಟ್ಟೆವು. ಬಾಬ್ ಗೆ ಇವನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ವಿವರಿಸಲು ಹೋಗದೇ '' ಜನರಿಗೆ ಮೋಸಮಾಡದೆ ಕಷ್ಟ ಪಟ್ಟು ದುಡಿದು ಸ೦ಪಾದಿಸು, ನಿನಗೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದಾಗಲಿ ಎ೦ದು ಈ-ಮೈಲ್ ಮಾಡಿದೆವು. ಹೊಸ ದೇಶದ ಮನೆ ಬೇಟೆಯ ನಮ್ಮ ಅನುಭವದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಘಟನೆ ಮರೆಯಲಾರದ ಪಾಠ ಕಲಿಸಿದೆ.
