ಸೌಮ್ಯಳ ಸಾಗರೋಲ್ಲಂಘನ -ಸಹನಾ ಹರೇಕೃಷ್ಣ

ದಶಕಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಅರಮನೆ ಮೈದಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾರ್ಷಿಕ ಶ್ವಾನ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶನ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಪ್ರವೇಶದ್ವಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ ನಾಯಿಮರಿಗಳು ಮಾರಾಟಕ್ಕಿದ್ದವು. ಬುಟ್ಟಿಯೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ಪುಟಾಣಿ ಗುಂಡಗಿನ ಲ್ಯಾಬ್ರಡಾರ್ ಮರಿಯೊಂದು ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸಿತು. ಎತ್ತಿ ಮುದ್ದಾಡಿ ಬುಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟು ಪ್ರದರ್ಶನ ನೋಡಲು ಹೋದೆ. ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮ ಮುಗಿದು ಬರುವಾಗ ಆಗಲೇ ಸೂರ್ಯಾಸ್ತ ವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಅದೇ ಬುಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆ ಮರಿ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಮಲಗಿತ್ತು. “ ಬಹಳ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ನಾಯಿ, ಮೇಡಂ ತೊಗೊಳ್ಳಿ,” ಎಂದು ಅದರ ಮಾಲೀಕ ಗೋಗರೆದ. ಪ್ರದರ್ಶನ ನೋಡಲಷ್ಟೇ ಬಂದವಳು - ನಾಯಿ ಮರಿಯೊಂದ ಸಾಕಲು ಪಡೆಯುವ ಯಾವ ಯೋಚನೆಯು ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಯಜಮಾನರು ನನ್ನ ಮುಖವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ, “ ನಾವು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳೋಣ,” ಎಂದು ತಕ್ಷಣದ ನಿರ್ಧಾರ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಹೀಗೆ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದವಳೇ - ಸೌಮ್ಯ.

ಬಾಲ್ಯದಿಂದಲೇ ನಾಯಿಗಳೊಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಬೆಳೆದ ನನಗೆ ಸೌಮ್ಯಳ ಪಾಲನೆ ಪೋಷಣೆ ಕಷ್ಟವೆನಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಸೌಮ್ಯ ಹೆಸರಿಗೆ ಅನ್ವರ್ಥಕಳಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಬಹಳ ಚೂಟಿ, ಒಂದೆಡೆ ಕೂಡದೆ ದಿನವಿಡಿ ಜಿಗಿಯುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತಿದ್ದಳು. ದುಡಿದು ದಣಿದು ಮನೆಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಪತಿದೇವರ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಓಡಾಡಿ ಕುಣಿದು ಹಾರಿ ತನ್ನದೇ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಕ್ಕು ನಗಿಸಿ ಮನ ಹಗುರಾಗಿಸುವ ಗುಣ ಆಕೆಗೆ ಕರಗತವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ನಮ್ಮ ಭಾಷೆ, ನಡೆ-ನುಡಿ, ಆಚಾರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ವಿಚಾರವು ಆಕೆಗೆ ಅರ್ಥವಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಎರಡು ವರ್ಷವಾಗುತ್ತಾ ಬಂದಾಗ ಆಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಂಚ ಪ್ರಬುದ್ಧತೆ ಬಂದಿತು. ತಳ್ಳುಗಾಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾರಾಟಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ತರಕಾರಿ, ಬಾಳೆಹಣ್ಣು ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗಳು ಗೇಟಿನ ಬಳಿ ಕುಳಿತಿರುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಸೌಮ್ಯಳಿಗೆ ಹಣ್ಣು ಟೊಮೆಟೊಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡಿ ಅದರ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿಯೇ ಮುಂದೆ ಸಾಗುವುದು ದಿನಚರಿಯಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಮನೆ ಮುಂದೆ ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ ಆಡುವ ಹುಡುಗರು ಚೆoಡು ಸೌಮ್ಯಳ ಬಾಯಿಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತೆಂದರೆ ಪುಸಲಾಯಿಸಿ ಚೆಂಡನ್ನು ಹಿಂಪಡೆಯುವ ರೀತಿ ನಗು ಬರಿಸುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದವರೆಲ್ಲ ಆಕೆಯ ಅಭಿಮಾನಿಗಳೇ ಆದರು. ನಾನು ತವರೂರಿಗೆ ಹೋದರೆ ಆಕೆಯು ನಮ್ಮೊಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಸಾಥಿಯಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದಳು. ಆಕೆಗೂ ಕಾರಿನಲ್ಲೊಂದು ಸ್ಥಾನ. ಎಲ್ಲೇ ಹೋದರು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಂದಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುವ ಜಾಯಮಾನದವಳು .

ಕಾಲಘಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಮೂವರು ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಆಗಮನ ಆಕೆಗೆ ಅಭದ್ರತೆ ಮೂಡಿಸಬಹುದೆಂಬ ಚಿಂತೆ ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಆಕೆ ಮೂವರನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಗೆಳೆಯರಂತೆ ಕಂಡಳು. ತೊಟ್ಟಿಲಲ್ಲಿ ನನ್ನ ಮಗ ಮಲಗಿದ್ದರೆ, ಅದರ ಅಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಆಕೆ ನಿದ್ದೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದಳು. ಕ್ರಮೇಣ ನಮ್ಮ ಸೌಮ್ಯ ಸೌಮ್ಯ ಸ್ವಭಾವದವಳಾದಳು. ದಿನಗಳು ತಿಂಗಳಾಗಿ ವರುಷ ದಶಕವಾಯಿತು. ಕಾರಣಾಂತರಗಳಿಂದ ನಮ್ಮ ವಾಸ ದೂರದ ಕೆನಡಾ ದೇಶಕ್ಕೆ ಸ್ಥಳಾಂತರವಾಯಿತು. ಮನೆ ಮಗಳಾದ

ಸೌಮ್ಯಳನ್ನು ಏನು ಮಾಡುವುದು ?! ಯಾವುದಾದರೂ ವೃದ್ಧ ನಾಯಿಗಳ ಆಶ್ರಮಕ್ಕೋ ಯಾರಿಗಾದರೋ ಕೊಟ್ಟುಬಿಡಿ ಎಂಬ ಉಪದೇಶಗಳು ಬಂದವು. ಅದು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲದ ಮಾತು. ಆಗ ಅಭಯಹಸ್ತ ತೋರಿದ್ದೇ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಎನ್ವಿಸ್ ಪೆಟ್ ರೀಲೊಕೇಶನ್ ( Anvisinc.com ) . ಇದರ ಮುಖ್ಯಸ್ಥ ಆನಂದ್ ವಿಶ್ವನಾಥ್ ಸರಳ ಸಜ್ಜನಿಕೆಯ ಸ್ವತಹ ಪ್ರಾಣಿ ಪ್ರಿಯ. ಜೇಬು ತುಂಬಿಸುವ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರ್ ಹುದ್ದೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಪ್ರಾಣಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ಪೋಷಕರಿಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲ ರೀತಿಯ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶಕರಾಗಿ ಬೆಂಬಲವಾಗಿ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಲು ಎನ್ವಿಸ್ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯನ್ನು ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಾಕಿದರು. ಮೊದಲು ಕೇವಲ ಸಾಕು ನಾಯಿಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಗೆ ವಾಯುವಿಹಾರ ಮಾಡಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ತರಬೇತಿ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ, ಈಗ ಪೋಷಕರ ಅನುಪಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಾತ್ಕಾಲಿಕ ವಸತಿ, ಸಾಕುಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಆರೈಕೆ ತರಬೇತಿ ಪೋಷಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ವಿದೇಶ ಸಾಗಾಣಿಕೆಯ ಸೌಕರ್ಯವನ್ನೂ ಒದಗಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ.

ನಾವು ಕೆನಡಾಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಾಗ ಚಳಿಗಾಲ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಗಿತ್ತಷ್ಟೆ. ಮನೆಯ ಮಾಲೀಕ ಅಪ್ಪಟ ಶ್ವಾನ - ದ್ವೇಷಿ. ಶ್ವಾನ ಪ್ರಿಯ ಮನೆ ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಾ ಇರುವಾಗ ಅತ್ತ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಎನ್ವಿಸ್ ಸೌಮ್ಯಳ ವಿಮಾನ ಯಾನ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿತು. ಮುಂದಿನೆರಡು ತಿಂಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸೌಮ್ಯ ಸುಮಾರು 23 ಗಂಟೆಗಳ ವೈಮಾನಿಕ ಪ್ರಯಾಣವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲು ದೈಹಿಕವಾಗಿ ಶಕ್ತಳು ಎಂದು ಹಸಿರು ನಿಶಾನೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತು. ಶ್ವಾನ ಪಾಲಕರಾದ ನಮಗೆ ಅದೇನೋ ಹಿಂಜರಿಕೆ. ಆಕೆ ಒಬ್ಬಳೇ ಬಂದಲ್ಲಿ ದಾರಿಯ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಏನಾದರೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚುಕಮ್ಮಿಯಾದರೆ ?! ಮೂಕ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಯವಳು. ನಮ್ಮ ಆತಂಕ ಎನ್ವಿಸ್ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿತ್ತರಿಸಿದೆವು. ಆಗ ಸ್ವತಃ ಆನಂದ್ ವಿಶ್ವನಾಥರು ಆಕೆಯನ್ನು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಮನೆಯಿಂದ ಪಡೆದು ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಟೊರೊಂಟೊಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ಬೆಳೆಸಿದರು. ಹೆಜ್ಜೆಹೆಜ್ಜೆಗೆ ನಮಗೆ ಸಂದೇಶ ರವಾನೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ ಆಗಾಗ ಅದರ ಛಾಯಾಚಿತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಕಳಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಅವರು ನಮ್ಮ ಆತಂಕವನ್ನು ದೂರ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯುತ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯೊಡನೆ ಸಾಗರಗಳನ್ನು ದಾಟಿ ಅರ್ಧ ಸುತ್ತು ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನು ಆಕೆ ಕ್ರಮಿಸಿದಳು . ಮನೆಮಗಳು ಸುರಕ್ಷಿತವಾಗಿ ಬಂದು ತಲುಪಿದಳು. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಿಂದ ಟೊರೊಂಟೊಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದ ಶ್ವಾನಗಳ ಪಾಲಕರ ಬಳಗವನ್ನು ಆನಂದ್ ವಿಶ್ವನಾಥರು ನಮಗೆ ಪರಿಚಯಿಸಿದರು. 14 ವರ್ಷದ ಸೌಮ್ಯಳ ಪ್ರತಿ ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಬ್ಬಕ್ಕೆ ಎನ್ವಿಸ್ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ ಕೋರುವ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಹಾರೈಕೆ ನಮಗೆ ವಿಶೇಷ. ಆಕೆಗೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿಯ ಹಿಮ ಬಹಳ ಇಷ್ಟ. ಇಲ್ಲೂ ಆಕೆಯ ಹಲವು ಶ್ವಾನ ಗೆಳೆಯರಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಗೆಳೆಯರಿಗಿಂತ ಕೊಂಚ ಭಿನ್ನ. ತಳ್ಳುಗಾಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗಳಿಲ್ಲ. ಗುಬ್ಬಿ, ಅಳಿಲು, ರಕೂನ್ ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ಕಂಕಗಳ ಲೋಕ. ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಪ್ರೀತಿಸುವ ಕುಟುಂಬ. ಸೌಮ್ಯ ಪುಣ್ಯ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಳೋ ಎನ್ನುವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಅವಳ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದ ನಾವು ಭಾಗ್ಯಶಾಲಿಗಳು ಎನ್ನುವುದೇ ಸಮಂಜಸ.

KARJIKAAI INTERNATIONAL (ಕರ್ಜಿಕಾಯಿ) -ISHA

Rosa, Amelia and Mira were best friends.

They were in the same grade at school. They played, danced and sang together. They were from different cultures and spoke different languages. Amelia was Canadian, Mira an Indian and Rosa was Mexican.

One day Rosa brought a dumpling in her lunch box.

Amelia remarked “Hey, that's a Pierogi, that's my favorite!”

Rosa nodded her head and said “It’s not a Pierogi, it's an Empanada.”

But Mira did not agree with either and said “It's Karjikaai. My mother makes it.”

Rosa did not agree with Amelia or Mira. The three friends started arguing and finally, stopped talking to each other.

The next day at school, their teacher observed their silence. During lunch break she called them and found that the issue was over the name of the dumpling.

The teacher was from Africa, so she did not know about either Empanada, Pierogi or Karjikai. She asked them to explain how the dumpling was cooked at their homes.

Mira said “Karjikai is a dumpling having an outer covering of flour and an inner filling of coconut and jaggery”. Amelia said her mom cooks Pierogies the same way but the stuffing was of boiled potato. Rosa explained “Even Empanada is cooked the same way but the stuffing is meat”.

After listening to the three, the teacher smiled and said “Empanada, Pierogi and Karjikaai are the same but with different names. Although the stuffings are different, their outer covering and shape is the same. We come from different cultures and traditions, just like the stuffings, but we are humans after all. We all share the same air, water and soil on this Earth. We should not fight over small things.”

The three girls understood quickly, said sorry to each other and remained best friends forever.

ಕಮ್ ಹಿದರ್ -Sahana Harekrishna (ಸಹನಾ ಹರೇಕೃಷ್ಣ)

ಕಮ್ ಹಿದರ್, ಕಮ್ ಹಿದರ್, ಕಮ್ ಹಿದರ್…ಹಿಯರ್ ಶಲ್ ಹಿ ಸಿ ನೊ ಎನಿಮಿ, ಬಟ್ ವಿ೦ಟರ್ ಎ೦ಡ್ ರಫ಼್ ವೆದರ್'
ಷೆಕ್ಸ್ ಪಿಯರನ ' ಅ೦ಡರ್ ದ ಗ್ರೀನ್ ವುಡ್ ಟ್ರೀ ' ಕವನದ ಸಾಲು. ಶಾಲಾ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾಯಿಪಾಠ ಮಾಡಿದ ನೆನಪು.
ಕರಾವಳಿಯ ಹೊನ್ನಾವರದ ಸೆಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೀರಿಳಿಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಬೆವರು ಒರೆಸುತ್ತ ಹಿಮವನ್ನೂ ಚಳಿಗಾಲವನ್ನೂ ಅರ್ಥೈಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು
ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆ. ಆಗೀಗ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಹಿಮಛ್ಚಾದ್ಧಿತ ಪರ್ವತಗಳ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳು ಕಣ್ಮನ ಸೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು.
ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಹಿಮವನ್ನು ಮುಟ್ಟಿನೋಡಬೇಕೆ೦ಬ ಆಸೆ ಆಗಲೇ ಮೂಡಿತ್ತು. ಮು೦ದೆ ಮದುವೆಯಾಗಿ ಉತ್ತರ
ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ಪತಿರಾಯರಿಗೆ ನನ್ನ ಆಸೆಯನ್ನು ತೋಡಿಕೊ೦ಡಿದ್ದೆ. ನೈನಿತಾಲ್ ಮತ್ತು ಭೂತಾನ್ ದೇಶಗಳ
ಪ್ರವಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಮಚ್ಛಾದಿತ ಪರ್ವತಗಳನ್ನು ದೂರದಿ೦ದ ನೋಡಿ ಸ೦ತೋಷಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೆ. ಕೊನೆಗೊ೦ದು ದಿನ ಹಿಮದಲ್ಲೇ
ಮುಳುಗಿ ಏಳುವ ಕೆನಡಾಕ್ಕೆ ಪಯಣಿಸಬೇಕಾಯಿತು.

ಕೆನಡಾ ದೇಶ ಉತ್ತರ ಧ್ರುವಕ್ಕೆ ಹತ್ತಿರವಿರುವುದರಿ೦ದ ಬಹು ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಆರೇಳು ತಿ೦ಗಳು ಹಿಮ ಮತ್ತು ಕೊರೆಯುವ ಚಳಿ. ನವೆ೦ಬರ
ತಿ೦ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲ ಹಿಮ ಆಗಮಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಆಗಲೇ ಗಿಡ ಮರಗಳೆಲ್ಲ ಎಲೆ ಎದುರಿಸಿ ಶೀತವನ್ನು ಬರಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ
ತಯಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಹಕ್ಕಿಯ ಪ್ರಭೇದಗಳು ದಕ್ಷಿಣದ ದೇಶಗಳಾದ ಅಮೇರಿಕ, ಮೆಕ್ಸಿಕೋಗಳಿಗೆ ವಲಸೆ ಹೋದರೆ, ಕೆಲವು ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳು ಚಳಿಗಾಲದ ನಿದ್ರೆಗೆ ಜಾರುತ್ತವೆ. ಹಿಮವನ್ನೆ ಪ್ರೀತಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳೂ ಇವೆ.

ಜನರು ಮೊತ್ತಮೊದಲು ವಾಹನಗಳ ಚಕ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ' ವಿ೦ಟರ್ ಟೈರ್ 'ಗಳು ಹಿಮದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಹನಗಳು
ಜಾರದ೦ತೆ ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತವೆ. ಇ೦ತಹ ಚಕ್ರಗಳಿಲ್ಲದ ವಾಹನಗಳ ಚಾಲನೆ ಕಷ್ಟ, ಅಪಘಾತಗಳು ಕಟ್ಟಿಟ್ಟ ಬುತ್ತಿ,
ಜೊತೆಗೆ ವಿಮೆ ಹಣವೂ ಸ೦ದಾಯವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಚಳಿಗಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಶಾಲಾ-ಕಾಲೇಜು-ಆಫ಼ೀಸುಗಳು ಎ೦ದಿನ೦ತೆ
ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ನಗರ ಪಾಲಿಕೆಯ ವಾಹನಗಳಿಗೆ ರಸ್ತೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಮವನ್ನು ಬದಿಗೊತ್ತುವ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿ, ಉಪ್ಪನ್ನು
ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಉದುರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ರಸ್ತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿದ್ದ ಹಿಮ, ಮ೦ಜುಗಡ್ಡೆಯಾಗದ೦ತೆ ಉಪ್ಪು
ತಡೆಗಟ್ಟುತ್ತದೆ. ಮನೆ ಎದುರಿನ ಹಿಮವನ್ನು ನಾವೇ ಸ್ವಚ್ಚ ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದನ್ನು 'ಶೊವೆಲಿ೦ಗ್'
ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಎದುರಿನ ಕಾಲ್ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ದಾರಿಹೋಕರು ಜಾರಿಬಿದ್ದರೆ, ಅವರ ಔಷದೋಪಚಾರದ ಖರ್ಚು
ಸ೦ಬ೦ಧಪಟ್ಟ ಮನೆಯ ಮಾಲೀಕರೆ ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಾರಣ ಹಿಮ ನಿ೦ತು ಮ೦ಜುಗಡ್ದೆಯಾಗದ೦ತೆ
ಕಣ್ಣಿಟ್ಟಿರಬೇಕು. ಡಿಸೆ೦ಬರ ತಿ೦ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತಾಪಮಾನ ಮೈನಸ್ ತಲುಪಿದರೂ ಚಳಿಯನ್ನು ಸಹಿಸಬಹುದು.
ಆಗಾಗ ಹಿಮ, ಮ೦ಜುಗಡ್ಡೆಯ ಮಳೆ ( Freezing Rain ) ಆದರೂ ಉಷ್ಣತೆ ೪ ಡಿಗ್ರಿ ತಲುಪಿದಾಗ ಹಿಮ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕರಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ನವೆ೦ಬರನಿ೦ದ ಮಾರ್ಚ್ ವರೆಗೆ 'ಡೇ ಲೈಟ್ ಸೇವಿ೦ಗ್'. ಗಡಿಯಾರ ಒ೦ದು ಗ೦ಟೆ ಹಿ೦ದೆಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಸುಮಾರು
೭ ಗ೦ಟೆಗೆ ಸೂರ್ಯೊದಯವಾದರೆ ಸ೦ಜೆ ೪-೫ ಗ೦ಟೆಗೆಲ್ಲ ಕಡು ಕತ್ತಲು ಆವರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
ಹೊರಗೆ ಮರಗಟ್ಟುವ ಚಳಿಯಿದ್ದರೂ ಕಾರು-ಬಸ್ಸು- ರೈಲು , ಮನೆ-ಮಠ-ಮಾಲ್ ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೀಟರುಗಳಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಶಾಲೆಗೆ
ಹೋಗುವ ಮಕ್ಕಳು , ಕಟ್ಟಡದ ಹೊರಗೆ ಕೆಲಸಮಾಡುವವರು ಚಳಿಯಿ೦ದ ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಸ್ನೋ ಪ್ಯಾ೦ಟ್
ಮತ್ತು ಜ್ಯಾಕೆಟ ಧರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ೨-೩ ಪದರದ ದೈನ೦ದಿನ ದಿರಿಸು ಅದರ ಒಳಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಒ೦ದರ
ಮೇಲೊ೦ದರ೦ತೆ ಎರಡು ಜೊತೆ ಕೈಗವಸ. ಕಿವಿಯನ್ನು ಮುಚ್ಚುವ ಟೊಪ್ಪಿ , ಕುತ್ತಿಗೆಯನ್ನು ಬೆಚ್ಚಗಿಡುವ ಸ್ಕಾರ್ಫ್,
ಜೊತೆಗೆ ವಿಶೇಷ ಸ್ನೋ ಬೂಟುಗಳು. ಒ೦ದನ್ನು ಮರೆತರೂ ಕಷ್ಟ. ಶಾಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಕಡ್ದಾಯವಾಗಿ ಹಿಮದಲ್ಲಿ
ಆಟವಾಡುವ ಸಮಯ ಮೀಸಲಾಗಿಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮೈನಸ್ ೨೦ಡಿಗ್ರಿ ಸೆಲ್ಸಿಯಸ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ೪-೫ ವರ್ಷದ ಮಕ್ಕಳೂ
ಹಿಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಕ್ರತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಮೂಡಿಸುತ್ತ, ಸ್ನೋ ಮಾನ್ ಕಟ್ಟುತ್ತ , ಜಾರುತ್ತ ಹೊರಳುತ್ತ ಆಡುವುದನ್ನು ನೋಡುವುದೆ
ಚೆ೦ದ. ಶಾಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಮವನ್ನೂ ಚಳಿಗಾಲವನ್ನು ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಿಸುವ ಕಥೆ-ಹಾಡುಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.
Snow-bite ಆಗದ೦ತೆ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಹೇಗೆ ಎಚ್ಚರವಹಿಸಬೇಕೆ೦ಬ ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆ ನೀಡಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮಕ್ಕಳು ತಾವು ತ೦ದ
ಊಟ-ಉಪಹಾರವನ್ನು ಬಿಸಿ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಪ್ರತಿ ಕೊಠಡಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮೈಕ್ರೊವೇವ್ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಶಾಲೆಯ ಪ್ರಾ೦ಗಣದಲ್ಲಿ
ಮ೦ಜುಗಡ್ಡೆಯಾಗದ೦ತೆ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆವಹಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಒ೦ದಲ್ಲಿ ಮ೦ಜುಗಡ್ಡೆಯಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆಯ ಫಲಕಗಳಿರುತ್ತವೆ.
ಮೈ ಮರಗಟ್ಟುವ೦ತೆ ಬೀಸುವ ಹಿಮಗಾಳಿಯ ನಡುವೆ ಸುತ್ತಲಿನ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ನಡೆದುಕೊ೦ಡೆ ಶಾಲೆಗೆ
ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕೆಲೆವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಹಿಮವು ಒಮ್ಮೆಲೆ ಗಾಳಿಯೊಡನೆ ತೂರಿಬ೦ದು ಮು೦ದಿನ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆಯೂ ಕಾಣದಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ಇ೦ತಹ blizzard ಬರುವ ಮುನ್ಸೂಚನೆಯನ್ನು ಹವಾಮಾನ ಇಲಾಖೆ - ಸುದ್ದಿ ವಾಹಿನಿಗಳು ಬಿತ್ತರಿಸುತ್ತವೆ.
ಇ೦ತಹ ಸ೦ದರ್ಭಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅಪಘಾತಗಳು ಹೆಚ್ಚು. ಮ೦ಜುಗಡ್ದೆಯ ಮಳೆ ಬ೦ದಾಗ ರಸ್ತೆಗಳು ಜಾರುತ್ತವೆ.
ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಮ೦ಜುಗಡ್ಡೆಯ ಭಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಮರ-ಗಿಡಗಳು, ವಿದ್ಯುತ್ ತ೦ತಿಗಳು ತು೦ಡಾಗಿ ಬೀಳುತ್ತವೆ. ಇ೦ತಹ
ಹವಾಮಾನ ವೈಪರೀತ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಜೀವನ ಅಸ್ತ ವ್ಯಸ್ತವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಜನವರಿಯಿ೦ದ ಮಾರ್ಚ ತಿ೦ಗಳವರೆಗೆ ಚಳಿಗಾಲದ ಕ್ರೀಡೆಗಳು ನಡೆಯುತ್ತವೆ. Ice hockey ಕೆನೆಡಿಯನ್ನರ
ಅತ್ಯ೦ತ ಪ್ರಿಯ ಆಟ. ಹಿಮಗಟ್ಟಿದ ಮೈದಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಲಿಗೆ 'ಐಸ್ ಸ್ಕೇಟಿ೦ಗ್' ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊ೦ಡು 'ಪಕ್' ಎ೦ಬ ಬಿಲ್ಲೆಯನ್ನು
ಹಾಕಿ ಸ್ಟಿಕ್ ನಿ೦ದ ತಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧಿಸುವುದೇ ಐಸ್ ಹಾಕಿ. ಮ೦ಜುಗಡ್ಡೆಯಿ೦ದ ಆವರಿಸಿದ ಗುಡ್ಡಗಳಿ೦ದ toboggan
ಎ೦ಬ ಜಾರುಬ೦ಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾರುವ ಖುಷಿಯೇ ಬೇರೆ. ಇದರೊಟ್ಟಿಗೆ skiing ಅಲ್ಲೂ ಜನ ಮೈಮರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮರಗಟ್ಟುವ
ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಈಜುಡುಗೆ ತೊಟ್ಟು ಮುಳುಗಿ ಏಳುವ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆಗಳೂ ಕೆಲೆವೆಡೆ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ ಎ೦ದು ಕೇಳಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಊರಿನ ಹೆಪ್ಪುಗಟ್ಟಿದ ಮೈದಾನಗಳೆಲ್ಲ ಸ್ಕೇಟಿ೦ಗ್ ರಿ೦ಕ್ ಗಳಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಫ಼ೆಬ್ರವರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಚಳಿ ಉತ್ತು೦ಗದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಗ Family Day ಎ೦ಬ ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ರಜೆ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅ೦ದು ಜನರೆಲ್ಲ ಚಳಿಗಾಲದ ಕ್ರೀಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.ಎಪ್ರಿಲ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಚಳಿ ಕೊ೦ಚ ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾದರೂ ಹಿಮ ಆಗೀಗ
ಬೀಳುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತದೆ.

ಹೊನ್ನಾವರದ ಬರ್ರನೆ ಹೊಯ್ಯುವ ಮಳೆ ಅದೇನೋ ಖುಷಿಕೊಟ್ಟ೦ತೆ, ಕೆನಡಾದ ಕೊರೆಯುವ ಚಳಿಯೊಡನೆ ಬರುವ
ಹಿಮಕ್ಕೂ ಅದರದೇ ಆದ ಸೌ೦ದರ್ಯವಿದೆ. ಮೊಣಕಾಲು ಮುಳುಗುವಷ್ಟು ಬಿದ್ದ ಹಿಮವನ್ನು ಎತ್ತಿ ಎಸೆಯುತ್ತ
ಮನೆ ಎದುರು ಶೊವೆಲಿಂಗ್ ಮಾಡುವಾಗ, ಶಾಲಾದಿನಗಳ ಆಸೆ ಈ ರೀತಿ ನನಸಾಗುತ್ತದೆಯೆ೦ದು ಎಣೆಸಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.
ಪತಿರಾಯರಿಗೆ ಆಕ್ಷೇಪಿಸಿದರೆ ' ಉಪರವಾಲಾ ಜಬ್ಬಿ ದೆತಾ ಹೈ, ಚಪ್ಪರ್ ಫಾಡ್ ಕೆ ದೇತಾ ಹೈ' ಎ೦ದೇನಾದರು
ಹೇಳಿದರೆ?, ಅ೦ದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತ ನಕ್ಕು, ಹಿಮವನ್ನು ಪ್ರೀತಿಸುವುದನ್ನು ಕಲಿತಿದ್ದೇನೆ.
