अश्रुतश्च समुन्नद्धो... -

अश्रुतश्च समुन्नद्धो दरिद्रश्च महामनाः ।
अर्थाश्चाकर्मणा प्रेप्सुर् मूढ इत्युच्यते बुधैः ॥

aśrutaśca samunnaddho daridraśca mahāmanāḥ |
arthāścākarmaṇā prepsur mūḍha ityucyate budhaiḥ ||

English translation of Sanskrit Subhshitani:
He who is illiterate but highly endowed, poor but high minded, however, seeking wealth through inaction, is regarded by the learned as a fool.

ಹೀಗೊ೦ದು ಅನುಭವ -SAHANA HAREKRISHNA

ಅದೊ೦ದು ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನ. ಮನೆಯ ಕರೆಗ೦ಟೆ ಬಾರಿಸಿತು. ಹೋಗಿ ಬಾಗಿಲು ತೆರೆದರೆ ಎದುರಿಗೆ ಪಕ್ಕದ ಮನೆಯ ಅಜ್ಜಿ ಕು೦ಟುತ್ತ ಒಳಗೆ ಬ೦ದಳು. ನನ್ನ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೂಗುಚ್ಛ ಕೊಟ್ಟು, ತನಗೊ೦ದು ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡು ಎ೦ದಳು. '' ಕಳೆದ ವಾರ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲು ಜಾರಿ ಬಿದ್ದೆ, ಸೊ೦ಟ ನೋವು. ಡಾಕ್ಟರ್ ಬಳಿ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದೆ. ಫಿಸಿಯೊಥೆರಪಿ ಮಾಡಿಸಿಕೊ ಎ೦ದರು. ಮಸಾಜ್ ಮಾಡುವವರು ಬಹಳ ಹಣ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಸರ್ಕಾರದ ಉಚಿತ ಸೇವೆ ಇದೆಯ೦ತೆ, ನಿನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತೆ ?'' ಎ೦ದು ಕೇಳಿದಳು. ಇ೦ದಿನವರೆಗೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಕುಟು೦ಬದಲ್ಲಿ ಅ೦ತಹ ಅವಘಡ ಆಗಿಲ್ಲದ ಕಾರಣ ನನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲವೆ೦ದೆ. ಆಕೆಯ ಮಗ ಅಮೆರಿಕೆಗೆ ಕೆಲಸದ ನಿಮಿತ್ತ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಆಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಗ೦ಡ. ಇಬ್ಬರಿಗೂ ಆ೦ಗ್ಲ ಭಾಷೆಯ ತೊಡಕು. ಗೂಗಲ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಡುಕಿಕೊಡು ಎ೦ದಳು.
ಸರೀ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾ ಅ೦ತರ್ಜಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾಲಾಡಿದೆ. ವೃದ್ಧರಿಗೆ ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಸೌಲಭ್ಯ ಇದೆಯೆ೦ದು, ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಮಾಹಿತಿಗೆ ಫೋನಾಯಿಸಬೇಕು ಎ೦ದು ಓದಿ ಹೇಳಿದೆ. ಕಣ್ಣಲ್ಲೇ ಅವಳು ವಿನ೦ತಿಸಿದನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ, ಕೊಟ್ಟ ನ೦ಬರಿಗೆ ಫೋನಾಯಿಸಿದೆ. ಅತ್ತಲಿನ ದನಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊ೦ಡು ನಮ್ಮ ಬಡಾವಣೆಯ ಜನ ಯಾರಿಗೆ ಸ೦ಪರ್ಕಿಸಬೇಕೆ೦ದು ಇನ್ನೊ೦ದು ನ೦ಬರ್ ಕೊಟ್ಟರು. ಅಜ್ಜಿಗೆ ತಳಮಳ. '' ನೋಡೋಣ, ನಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡೋಣ'' ಎ೦ದು ಆಕೆಗೆ ಸುಮ್ಮನಾಗಿಸಿ, ಮತ್ತೊ೦ದು ನ೦ಬರ್ ಡಯಲ್ ಮಾಡಿದೆ. ಈಗ ಶುರುವಾಯಿತು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳ ಸುರಿಮಳೆ. ನಾನು ಯಾರು? ಅಜ್ಜಿಗೆ ಹೇಗೆ ಸ೦ಬ೦ಧ? ಅಜ್ಜಿ ಒ೦ಟಿಯೇ, ತುರ್ತು ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಗ ಫೋನಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಗುತ್ತಾನೆಯೆ? ಅಜ್ಜಿಗೆ ಕೆಲಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಲು ಯಾರಿದ್ದಾರೆ? ಅಜ್ಜಿ ಬಿದ್ದದ್ದು ಹೇಗೆ? ಡಾಕ್ಟರ್ ಫಿಸಿಯೋಥೆರಪಿ ಬೇಕೆ೦ದು ಬರೆದು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೊ? ಡಾಕ್ಟರ್ ಹೆಸರೇನು? ಅಜ್ಜಿ ಒಡಾಡುತ್ತಾಳೊ? ಅಜ್ಜಿ ಪಿ೦ಚಣಿದಾರಳೋ ಹೀಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿ, ಅಜ್ಜಿ ಸೌಲಭ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಅರ್ಹಳು ಎ೦ದು ಹಸಿರು ನಿಶಾನೆ ನೀಡಿದರು. ಮು೦ದೆರಡು ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಫಿಸಿಯೋಥೆರಪಿ ಮಾಡುವವರೆ ಕರೆಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮನೆಗೆ ಬ೦ದು ಮಸಾಜ್ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎ೦ದರು. ನಾನು ಕೂಡ ದಿನವಿಡೀ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇರದ ಕಾರಣ ಅವರು ಫೋನಾಯಿಸಿದರೆ ಅಜ್ಜಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಭಾಷೆಯ ತೊಡಕು ಆಗಬಹುದೆ೦ದು, '' language preference '' ಕೊಡಲಾಗುವುದೇ ಎ೦ದು ಕೇಳಿದೆ. ಹಿ೦ದಿ ಭಾಷಿಕರು ಇದ್ದರೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು ಎ೦ದೆ. ಹಿ೦ದಿ ಭಾಷಿಕರು ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ಭಾಷಾ ತರ್ಜುಮೆಗಾರರು ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎ೦ದರವರು. ನನಗೂ ನಿರಮ್ಮಳವೆನಿಸಿತು. ಅಜ್ಜಿಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ವಿವರಿಸಿ ಹೇಳಿದೆ. ನೋವನ್ನು ಮರೆತು ಒ೦ದು ಕ್ಷಣ ಕಣ್ಣರಳಿಸಿ ನಕ್ಕಳು.
ಅಜ್ಜಿ ಮನೆಗೆ ಹೋದ ನ೦ತರ ಅದೇಕೋ ಅಮ್ಮ ನೆನಪಾದಳು. ದೂರದ ತವರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಮ್ಮ ಸಾಯುವ ಮುನ್ನ ಅನಾರೋಗ್ಯ ಪೀಡಿತಳಾಗಿ - ಹಾಸಿಗೆ ಹಿಡಿದು ಮಲಗಿದಾಗ, ವೈದ್ಯರೊಬ್ಬರು ಇದೇ ತೆರನ ಥೆರಪಿ ಆಕೆಗೆ ಬೇಕು ಎ೦ದಿದ್ದರು. ಎಷ್ಟು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಪಟ್ಟರೂ ಅದು ಈಡೇರಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆಕೆಗೂ ಇ೦ತಹ ಒ೦ದು ಸೌಲಭ್ಯ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ್ದರೆ ?!! ಎ೦ದು ಒ೦ದು ಕ್ಷಣ ನೆನಸಿ ಕಣ್ಣು ಮ೦ಜಾಯಿತು. ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ವೃದ್ಧ ಅಸಾಯಕರೆಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಇ೦ತಹ ಸೇವೆ ಲಭ್ಯವಿರಬೇಕು ಎ೦ದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತ ಅಜ್ಜಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಹೂಗುಚ್ಛವನ್ನು ಹೂದಾನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜೋಡಿಸಿದೆ.

ಕೆನಡಾದ ಮೂಲನಿವಾಸಿಗಳು -Sahana Harekrishna

ಯುರೋಪಿಯನ್ನರು ಭಾರತಕ್ಕೆ ಜಲಮಾರ್ಗ ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಾ ಅಮೆರಿಕಾ ತಲುಪಿ ಅಲ್ಲಿಯ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯರನ್ನು’ ರೆಡ್ ಇಂಡಿಯನ್ನರು’ ಎಂದು ಕರೆದರೆಂದು ಶಾಲಾ ಪಾಠ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿದ್ದೆ. ಕುತೂಹಲ ಕುಡಿಯೊಡೆದಿದ್ದೆ ಆಗ. ಅಂತರ್ಜಾಲ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಆ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ಪಾಲಕರು ಹೇಳಿದ್ದೆ ಕೇಳಿದ್ದು. ಕೆನಡಾಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಾಗಿನಿಂದ ಅವರ ಇರುವಿಕೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅರಿಯುವ ಅವಕಾಶ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಯಿತು.

ಯುರೋಪಿಯನ್ನರು ಕಾಲಿಟ್ಟ 11ನೇ ಶತಮಾನಕ್ಕೂ ಮುಂಚೆ ಮೂಲನಿವಾಸಿಗಳು ಅಮೆರಿಕದ ಉದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಶಾಂತಿಯಿಂದ ಜೀವನ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಕೇವಲ ಕೆನಡಾದಲ್ಲೇ ಆರುನೂರಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಪಂಗಡಗಳು ಇದ್ದವು. ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಪಂಗಡ ಇತರ ಪಂಗಡ ಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಕೊಂಚ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಕರ್ತನೇ ದೈವ ಸಮಾನ. ಸುತ್ತಲಿನ ಮಣ್ಣು-ಮರ, ಪಕ್ಷಿ - ಪ್ರಾಣಿ, ಜಲ -ವಾಯು ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಪೂಜ್ಯನೀಯವಾಗಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಪಂಗಡಕ್ಕೆ ಒಬ್ಬ ನಾಯಕ. ಅತ್ಯುತ್ತಮ ಬಿಲ್ಲುಗಾರನೆ ಆತನಾಗಿರುತ್ತಿದ್ದ. ಹತ್ತು ಹಲವಾರು ಜನರಿಂದ ಕೆಲವು ನೂರರಷ್ಟು ಜನಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯ ಗುಂಪುಗಳು ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಜೀವನ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಗಂಡಸರ ಕಸುಬು ಬೇಟೆಯಾಡುವುದು, ಕೃಷಿಗೆ ಬೇಕಾದ ನೆಲ ಸಮತಟ್ಟು ಮಾಡುವುದು, ಗುಡಿಸಲು ಕಟ್ಟುವುದು, ಮೀನು ಹಿಡಿಯುವುದು, ಪಂಗಡಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಜಗಳವಾದಲ್ಲಿ ರಕ್ಷಣೆ ಮಾಡುವುದು. ಹೆಂಗಸರೋ ಅಡುಗೆ- ಕೃಷಿ- ಉಡುಗೆ-ತೊಡುಗೆ ಸಿದ್ಧಪಡಿಸುವುದು, ಹಣ್ಣು-ಹಂಪಲು ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸುವುದು, ಚಿಕ್ಕಪುಟ್ಟ ಪ್ರಾಣಿ-ಪಕ್ಷಿಗಳ ಬೇಟೆಯಾಡಿದರೆ, ಮನೆಯ ಹಿರಿಯರು ಚಿಕ್ಕಮಕ್ಕಳ ಲಾಲನೆ-ಪಾಲನೆ, ತಮ್ಮ ಸಂಸ್ಕಾರ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯ ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ತಾವು ಕೇಳಿದ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಹೇಳುವ ಕಾಯಕದಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿರುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.

ಕೆನಡಾದ ಉತ್ತರಾರ್ಧ ವರ್ಷವಿಡೀ ಹಿಮಚ್ಚಾದಿತವಾದರೆ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾರ್ಧ ಬೇಸಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಮ ರಹಿತವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಮೂಲನಿವಾಸಿಗಳ ಕೆಲವು ಪಂಗಡಗಳು ಉತ್ತರದ ಹಿಮದಲ್ಲಿ ' ಇಗ್ಲೂ' ಗಳಂತಹ ಮನೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೆ ದಕ್ಷಿಣದ ಪಂಗಡಗಳು ಅಲೆಮಾರಿ ಜೀವನ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಕೃಷಿಗೆ ಯೋಗ್ಯ ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನು ಸಮತಟ್ಟಾಗಿಸಿ ಕೆಲಕಾಲ ವಾಸಿಸಿ , ಭೂಮಿಯ ಫಲವತ್ತತೆ ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾದಾಗ ಇನ್ನೊಂದೆಡೆ ವಲಸೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಇವರು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಜೋಳ, ಬೀನ್ಸ್ ಮತ್ತು ಕುಂಬಳವನ್ನು ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಈ ರೀತಿಯ ಕೃಷಿಯನ್ನು 'ಮೂರು ಸಹೋದರಿಯರು' ( ೩ ಸಿಸ್ಟರ್ಸ್ ) ಎಂದು ಕರೆದರು. ಇವನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮ ಅಡುಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಕ್ಕಾಗಿಯೂ ಬಳಸಿದರು. ಉತ್ತರದ ಭಾಗ ಹಿಮದಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಅಲ್ಲಿಯ ಮೂಲನಿವಾಸಿಗಳು ಕೇವಲ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳನ್ನು ಬೇಟೆಯಾಡಿ ಜೀವನ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳ ಮಾಂಸ ಸೇವಿಸಿ , ಉಳಿದ ಚರ್ಮವನ್ನು ಸ್ವಚ್ಛಗೊಳಿಸಿ ಮನೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಹೊದಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು . ಶೀತಗಾಳಿಯಿಂದ ರಕ್ಷಣೆ ಪಡೆಯುವ ವಿಧಾನ. ಗಂಡಸರು ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳ ಬೇಟೆಯಾಡಿದರೆ ಹೆಂಗಸರು ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳ ಚರ್ಮದಿಂದ ಉಡುಗೆ-ತೊಡುಗೆ ತಯಾರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಬೇಸಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಕ್ಕೆ ತೆರಳಿ ಬೇಳೆ ಕಾಳುಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಂಡು ಅಲ್ಲಿಯ ಮೂಲನಿವಾಸಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಚರ್ಮದ ಉಡುಗೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟು ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ವಹಿವಾಟು ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಹೆಚ್ಚಾದ ಬೇಳೆಕಾಳುಗಳನ್ನು ನೆಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೂತಿಟ್ಟು ಚಳಿಗಾಲಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಕಾಪಿಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.

ತ್ರಿಕೋನಾಕಾರದ ಇವರ ಮನೆಗಳನ್ನು ' ಟೀಪೀ ' ಎಂದರೆ ಕಟ್ಟಿಗೆಯ ಮನೆಗಳನ್ನು' ಲಾಂಗ ಹೌಸ್ ' ಎನ್ನಬಹುದು. ಟೀಪಿ ಗುಡಿಸಲುಗಳು ಕಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಾಣಿಯ ಚರ್ಮದಿಂದಾದರೆ ಅವನ್ನು ಒಂದೆಡೆಯಿಂದ ಇನ್ನೊಂದೆಡೆ ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಮಡಚಿ ಸಾಗಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.. ಇವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದೇ ಕುಟುಂಬ ವಾಸಿಸಿದರೆ ಲಾಂಗ್ ಹೌಸ್ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹತ್ತು ಹಲವಾರು ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳು ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಜೀವಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಕಾರಣ ಈ ಗುಡಿಸಲುಗಳು ಸಹಜವಾಗಿ ದೊಡ್ಡದಿರುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು. ಕಾಡು ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳಿಂದ ರಕ್ಷಣೆ ಪಡೆಯಲು ಗುಡಿಸಲುಗಳ ಸುತ್ತ ತಾತ್ಕಾಲಿಕ ಬೇಲಿಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಪಂಗಡಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಕ್ಲೇಶಗಳಿದ್ದರೂ ವೈಷಮ್ಯ ಇರುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಬಿಲ್ಲು ಬಾಣಗಳು ಬಳಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದವು. ವರ್ಷದ ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ ಸಮಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಒಂದೆಡೆ ಸೇರಿ ಜಾನಪದ ಹಾಡು- ನೃತ್ಯ ಆಟೋಟ ಗಳನ್ನು ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಆಕರ್ಷಣೀಯ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ದಿರಿಸುಗಳನ್ನು ತೊಟ್ಟು ನರ್ತಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಾಕಾರವನ್ನು 'ಪೌವ್ ವಾವ್ ' ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಚಿಕನ್ ಡ್ಯಾನ್ಸ್, ಕ್ರೊ ಹಾಪ್ ಡಾನ್ಸ್ , ರಾಬಿಟ್ ಡ್ಯಾನ್ಸ್, ಸ್ನಿಯಿಕ್ ಅಪ್ ಅಪ್ ಡಾನ್ಸ್ , ಸ್ಮೋಕ್ ಡಾನ್ಸ್ , ಹೂಪ್ ಡಾನ್ಸ್ , ಔಲ್ ಡಾನ್ಸ್ , ಫ್ರೆಂಡ್ಶಿಪ್ ಡ್ಯಾನ್ಸ್, ಲೆಕ್ಕವಿಲ್ಲದಷ್ಟು ನೃತ್ಯ ಪ್ರಾಕಾರಗಳಿವೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ತಕ್ಕ ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕ ವಾದ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಅವರು ನುಡಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.
ಯುರೋಪಿನ ದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಉಂಟಾದ ಅಸಹಕಾರ ದಂಗೆಯಾಗಲಿ, ಆಫ್ಘ್ಗನ್ನರ ದಾಳಿಯಿಂದ ತತ್ತರಿಸಿ ಭಾರತಕ್ಕೆ ಸಮುದ್ರ ಮಾರ್ಗವನ್ನು ಕಂಡುಹಿಡಿಯಲಾಗಲೀ ಅಥವಾ ಬೀವರ್ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಯ ಉಣ್ಣೆಗಾಗಿ ಆಂಗ್ಲರು, ಫ್ರೆಂಚರು ಅಮೆರಿಕದೆಡಗೆ ಯಾನ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದರು. ಹೀಗೆ ಬಂದ ವಿದೇಶಿಯರು ಸ್ಥಳೀಯರೊಡನೆ ಸ್ನೇಹ ಸಂಪಾದಿಸಿ ಬೀವರ್ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳನ್ನು ಬೇಟೆಯಾಡಿ ಸಹಸ್ರಾರು ಹಡಗುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಯುರೋಪಿಗೆ ಉಣ್ಣೆಯ ಸಾಗಾಟ ನಡೆಸಿದರು. ಇಲ್ಲಿಯ ಮೂಲನಿವಾಸಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಣ್ಣಪುಟ್ಟ ಯುದ್ಧದ ಪರಿಕರಗಳನ್ನು, ಮದ್ಯವನ್ನು ಪರಿಚಯಿಸಿದರು. ಹೀಗೆ ಬಂದ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗಳು ಅಲ್ಲಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾಗ ಗುರುತಿಸಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಧ್ವಜವನ್ನು ಏರಿಸಿದರು. ಉದಾಹರೆಣೆಗೆ ೧೨ ಅಕ್ಟೋಬರ್ ೧೪೯೨ರಲ್ಲಿ ಕೋಲಂಬಸ್ ಬಹಾಮಾಸ್ ದ್ವೀಪ ತಲುಪಿ ಸ್ಪೇನಿನ ಧ್ವಜ ಏರಿಸಿದ. ಲೂಕಯಾನ ಎಂಬ ಇಲ್ಲಿಯ ಮೂಲನಿವಾಸಿಗಳು ಈ ದ್ವೀಪವನ್ನು 'ಗ್ವಾನಹನಿ' ಎಂದು ಕರೆದರೆ ಸ್ಪೇನಿಗರು ಇದನ್ನು ಸಾನ್ ಸಾಲ್ವಡಾರ್ ಎಂದರು.

ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಮೂಲನಿವಾಸಿ ಯುವತಿಯರನ್ನು ವಿದೇಶಿಗರು ಮದುವೆಯಾದರು. ಈ ಯುವತಿಯರು ಭಾಷೆ ತರ್ಜುಮೆ ಮಾಡುವಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹುವಾಗಿ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಆಂಗ್ಲರು ಮತ್ತು ಫ್ರೆಂಚರ ನಡುವೆ ವಸಾಹತುಗಳ ಒಡೆತನಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಸತತ ಯುದ್ಧಗಳು ನಡೆದವು. ಆದರೂ ಇವರು ಮೂಲನಿವಾಸಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕ್ರಮೇಣ ಹತೋಟಿಗೆ ಪಡೆದುಕೊಂಡರು. ರೆಡ್ ಇಂಡಿಯನ್ನರು ತಮ್ಮದೇ ನಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪರಕೀಯರಾದರು. ಕಾಲಾಂತರದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂಡೆದ್ದ ಕೋಟಿಗಟ್ಟಲೆ ಮೂಲನಿವಾಸಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಲ್ಲಲಾಯಿತು. ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಪಾಲಕರಿಂದ ಬೇರ್ಪಡಿಸಿ ವಸತಿ ಶಾಲೆಗಟ್ಟಲಾಯಿತು. ಪವಿತ್ರತೆಯ ಸಂಕೇತವಾದ ಅವರ ತಲೆಕೂದಲನ್ನು ಇಂತಹ ಶಾಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕತ್ತರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಮೂಲ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಿ ಆ೦ಗ್ಲ ಹೆಸರುಗಳನ್ನು ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಹೇರಲಾಯಿತು. ಮಾತೃ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಭಾಷಿಸುವುದನ್ನು ನಿಷೇಧಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಒಂದು ಶತಮಾನಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಕಾಲ ಇಂತಹ ವಸತಿ ಶಾಲೆಗಳು ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿದವು. ಲೆಕ್ಕವಿಲ್ಲದಷ್ಟು ಯುವತಿಯರು ಮಹಿಳೆಯರು ಕಾಣೆಯಾದರು. ಇಂತಹ ಹಲವು ಕಾರಣಗಳಿಂದ ಮೂಲನಿವಾಸಿಗಳು ಈಗಲೂ ' ಥ್ಯಾಂಕ್ಸ್ ಗಿವಿಂಗ್ ' ಎಂಬ ದಿನವನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸಲಾರರು.

ಇ೦ದಿನ ಪ್ರಜೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಸರಕಾರ ಹಿ೦ದೆ ನಡೆದ ಇ೦ತಹ ಹೇಯ ಕ್ರತ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಖ೦ಡಿಸುವುದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಆಗಾಗ ಮೂಲನಿವಾಸಿಗಳ ಕ್ಷಮೆ ಯಾಚಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ ಶಾಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಷ್ಟೃಗೀತೆ ಹಾಡುವ ಮುನ್ನ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಈ ಮೂಲನಿವಾಸಿಗಳನ್ನು ನೆನಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕೆ೦ಬ ಕಾನೂನು ರೂಪಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ವರ್ಷದಿ೦ದ ಸೆಪ್ಟೆ೦ಬರ ೩೦ನ್ನು ನಾಶನಲ್ ಡೆ ಫ಼ೊರ್ ಟ್ರುತ್ ಅನ್ದ್ ರಿಕ೦ಸಿಲೆಶನ್ ಎ೦ದು ಸರ್ಕಾರ ಗುರುತಿಸಿದೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಕಳೆದ ಕೆಲವು ದಶಕಗಳಿಂದ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಬದಲಾವಣೆ ಆಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಮೂಲನಿವಾಸಿಗಳ ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಾಗಿ ಹಲವು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳು ಸಂಘ-ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳು ಸಂಯಮದಿಂದ ದುಡಿಯುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಮೂಲನಿವಾಸಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಅವರದೇ ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸಿ ವಸತಿ ಸೌಕರ್ಯ ನೀಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಆರ್ಥಿಕ ಸೌಲಭ್ಯ ಕೂಡ ನೀಡಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ವಸತಿ ಶಾಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮುಚ್ಚಲಾಗಿದೆ.ಅವರ ಕರಕುಶಲ- ಗುಡಿ ಕೈಗಾರಿಕೆಗೆ ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹ ದೊರಕುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಹಿನಿಯಿಂದ ಅವರ ವಸತಿ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳು ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೂ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯರು ಅವರನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿಯಾಗುವ- ಅವರ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಅರಿಯುವ ಅವಕಾಶ ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ವರ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಗಾಗ ಅವರ ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಗಳು ನಡೆಯುತ್ತವೆ. ಇತರರು ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗಿಯಾಗಬಹುದು. ಮೂಲನಿವಾಸಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ' ಶಮನ್ ' ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುವ ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿಯಾಗುವ ಸದಾವಕಾಶವಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇವರ ಗಿಡಮೂಲಿಕೆಯ ರಹಸ್ಯ ಔಷಧಿಗಳು ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಜೀವಂತವಾಗಿವೆ. ಕೆನಡದ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿರುವ ' ಹೈದ ' ರೆ೦ಬ ಮೂಲನಿವಾಸಿಗಳು ಈಗಲೂ ' ಟೊಟೆಮ್ ' ಎ೦ಬ ಮರದ ಕೆತ್ತನೆಯ ಸ೦ದೇಶ ಸ್ತ೦ಭಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರದರ್ಶಿಸುವ ರೂಢಿಯಿಟ್ಟುಕೊ೦ಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ನುನಾವಟ್ ಎ೦ಬ ಉತ್ತರದ ರಾಜ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿರುವ ಎಸ್ಕಿಮೊಗಳಾದ 'ಇನ್ಯುಟ್' ಮೂಲನಿವಾಸಿಗಳು ಇ೦ದಿಗೂ ಕಾರಿಬೂ ಎ೦ಬ ರೈಂಡೀಯರ್ ಜಿ೦ಕೆಗಳನ್ನೆ ಬೇಟೆಯಾಡಿ ಹಸಿ ಮಾ೦ಸವನ್ನು ಒಣಗಿಸಿ ತಿನ್ನುವ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ನಾಯಿ ಬ೦ಡಿಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಹಿಮ ವಾಹನಗಳನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲೆಡೆ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಹೀಗೆ ಇತಿಹಾಸವನ್ನು ಮರೆಯದೆ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಆಧುನಿಕ ಜೀವನಕ್ಕೆಒಗ್ಗಿ, ತಮ್ಮ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯವನ್ನು ಗೌರವಿಸಿ ಬದುಕುತ್ತಿರುವ ಈ ಮೂಲನಿವಾಸಿಗಳು ಇಂದು ಉತ್ತರ ಮತ್ತು ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಅಮೇರಿಕದುದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಅಲ್ಲಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡುಬರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಶತಮಾನಗಳ ನಂತರ ಅವರು ಸಹಜ ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ಜೀವನ ನಡೆಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹುವಾಗಿ ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

The personalities within... -Sri Aurobindo (श्री अरबिंदो)

Each human being is composed of different personalities that feel and behave in a different way and his action is determined by the one that happens to be prominent at the time. The one that has no feelings against anyone is either the psychic being or the emotional being in the heart, the one that feels anger and severe is a part of the external vital nature on the surface. This anger and severity is a wrong form of something that in itself has a value, a certain strength of will and force of action and control in the vital being, without which work can not be done. What is necessary is to get rid of the anger and to keep the force and firm will along with a developed judgement as to what is right thing to do in any circumstances. For instance, people can be allowed to do things in their own way when that doesn't spoil the work, when it is only their way of doing what is necessary to be done; when their way is opposed to the discipline of the work, then they have to be controlled, but it should be done quietly and kindly, not with anger. Very often, if one has developed a silent power of putting the Mother's force on the work with one's own will as instrument, that by itself may be sufficient without having to say anything as the person changes his way of himself as if by his own initiative.

Love of books -Isha

When I was small I was in India. I was in Bengaluru. My father made a small library in our house. There were thousands of books, some for kids. Me and my twin sister used to go there and just flip the pages because we did not know how to read or write.

Then we moved to Canada. When I was in grade 1, my teacher used to give us 2 books everyday. We used to take them home and read them. After reading, we had to write about the book even though we were not good in spelling or vocabulary. By the end of grade 1, I had finished reading almost 200 books. The books were for small kids that had only a few pages. My teacher also put me in a Reading Club. I first came to know about the 'Syllables' in the reading club. My Reading Guide taught us how to read a book in a fun way. There were students from all the classes, many were my seniors. At the start it was very hard but slowly I learnt how to read. Slowly my vocabulary grew and my love for books. We used to play language games if we had extra time.

At home my father slowly started to get books and hundreds of books made a small library here in Canada too. Once we finished our homework he used to ask "pick a book and read!". The fun fact is he will also sit with us and we all read together. He got tens of story books, series of Asterix and Obelix, Tintin, Chota Bheem, Calvin and Hobbes, many science books, literature, Indian mythological books. Oh!! You name it, he has it!
And my mother always says, "write, write and write your thoughts". So after reading every story or book, I pen down my thoughts about it. This is how I developed reading and writing.

So far I have read many books but my favorite book is "White Fang" by Jack London. It's a Fiction story and published in 1906. Story goes like this...

White Fang was a wolf. He was in a forest. Once a man feeds him and takes him to a village. White Fang was happily staying with him. One day the man went somewhere, and did not return. White Fang got curious and went out to search for him. He gets lost in a forest and goes to a nearby river. He makes a big leap and crosses the river. There he saw a group of people having fun watching a dog fight. They saw White Fang and caught him. They made White Fang fight with a Bull dog where White Fang lost the fight. A bad man took White Fang and tied him to a log. He used to hit White Fang with a whip and White Fang used to cry loudly ( I did not like this part in the book ). When he was away, a good man unties White Fang and takes him to his home. He takes care of White Fang with love. They played together, ate and slept together. But he had to go to New York for a new job and he was sad that he could not take White Fang along with him. He asks a person to take care of White Fang. The caretaker doesn't love White Fang , does not feed or play with him. One fine day, White Fang escapes and travels to New York city. He finds his friend who takes him to his home. The man was very happy and proud about White Fang. White Fang was happy as well. They lived happily ever after.

That's the story.

My love for books is still on and I now want to complete a book - Adventures of Dennis by Victor Dragunsky - which my father has given me recently.

Bhishma responds to Yudhishthiras' question

यस्मिन्यथा वर्तते यो मनुष्य: स्तस्मिंस्तथा वर्तितव्यं स धर्मः ।
मायाचारो मायया वर्तितव्य; साध्वाचार साधुना प्रत्युदय ।।

yasmin yathā vartate yo manuṣyas; tasmiṃs tathā vartitavyaṃ sa dharmaḥ ।
māyācāro māyayā vartitavyaḥ; sādhvācāraḥ sādhunā pratyudeyaḥ ।।

English Translation:
One should treat another as the latter does to him. A deceitful person should be thwarted with deceit, while an honest man should be treated with honesty.

This stanza is from the Mahabharata (Chapter 110 verse 26) where Bhishma is responding to Yudhishtira's question: How should a person act who wishes to follow virtue?

ಒ೦ದು ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಸ೦ವಹನಕ್ಕೆ ಅ೦ಚೆ ಮತ್ತು ತ೦ತಿಯೇ ಜೀವಾಳವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ದೂರವಾಣಿ ಬ೦ದ ಮೇಲೆ ಟೆಲೆಗ್ರಾಮ್ ದೂರವಾದರೆ, ಅ೦ತರ್ಜಾಲ ಬ೦ದ ಮೇಲೆ ಅ೦ಚೆಯೂ ಅಚ್ಚುಮೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಉಳಿಯಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೂ ಜಗತ್ತಿನಾದ್ಯ೦ತ ಅ೦ಚೆ ಚೀಟಿ ಸ೦ಗ್ರಹಿಸುವ ಹವ್ಯಾಸಿಗರು ಇ೦ದಿಗೂ ಇದ್ದಾರೆ. ಹಳೆಯ ಅ೦ಚೆ ಚೀಟಿಗಳು ಸ೦ಗ್ರಹಾರರ ನಡುವೆ ದುಬಾರಿ ಬೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾರಾಟವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ.

ನನ್ನ ಯಜಮಾನರಿಗೂ ಬಾಲ್ಯದಿ೦ದಲೆ ಅ೦ಚೆ ಚೀಟಿ ಸ೦ಗ್ರಹಿಸುವ ಹವ್ಯಾಸ. ಕೆನಡಾಕ್ಕೆ ಬ೦ದಾಗ ಇಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಅದರ ಬೇಟೆ ಶುರು ಹಚ್ಚಿಕೊ೦ಡರು. ಹೀಗೊಮ್ಮೆ ಅ೦ಚೆ ಚೀಟಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಾಗ ಪರಿಚಿತಳಾದವಳೇ - ಅಗಾಪೆ. ಜಮೈಕಾ ದೇಶದವಳು. ತನ್ನ ಅಜ್ಜಿ ಹಲವು ದೇಶ ಸುತ್ತಾಡಿ ಸ0ಗ್ರಹಿಸಿದ ಅಸ೦ಖ್ಯ ಅ೦ಚೆ ಚೀಟಿಗಳನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ನಮಗೇ ಕೊಟ್ಟವಳು.ಪ್ರತಿ ಭೇಟಿಯಲ್ಲೂ ಏನಾದರು ತಿನಿಸು ತ೦ದು ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಕುಳಿತು ಹ೦ಚಿ ತಿನ್ನುವುದು ಆಕೆಗೆ ಸ೦ತಸ ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಸಸ್ಯಹಾರಿಯಾದ ನಾನು,'' ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಮೀನು, ಮೊಟ್ಟೆ, ಮಾ೦ಸ ಇದೆಯೇ ?'' ಎ೦ದು ಕೇಳಿಯೆ ಸೇವಿಸುವುದು ನನ್ನ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ. ಆಗೆಲ್ಲ ಆಕೆ ನಕ್ಕು,'' ನೀನೊಬ್ಬ 'ರಾಸ್ತಾ' ಬಿಡು, ನಿನಗಾಗಿಯೆ 'ಐಟಲ್' ಹೋಟೆಲಿ೦ದ ಇದನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿಕೊ೦ಡು ಬ೦ದಿದ್ದೇನೆ'' ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಿದ್ದಳು. ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಕುತೂಹಲದಿ೦ದ ''ಏನಿದು ರಾಸ್ತಾ, ಐಟಲ್ '' ಎ೦ದು ಕೇಳಿದೆ. ಅಗಾಪೆಯ ಉತ್ತರ ಸ್ವಾರಸ್ಯಕರವಿದ್ದರೂ, ಅದು ನನಗೆ ಬೇರೊ೦ದು ಜಗತ್ತನ್ನೇ ಪರಿಚಯಿಸಿತು.

ರಾಸ್ತಾಫಾರಿ ಅಥವಾ ರಾಸ್ ಟಫಾರಿ ಒ೦ದು ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ - ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಚಳುವಳಿ. ಸರಾಸರಿ ಶತಮಾನದ ಹಿ೦ದೆ ಅ೦ದರೆ ೧೯೩೦ರಲ್ಲಿ ಜಮೈಕಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಪ್ರಾರ೦ಭವಾಯಿತು.

ಆ೦ಗ್ಲರ ಹಿಡಿತದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಜಮೈಕಾದ ಕಬ್ಬಿನ ಗದ್ದೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಲು ಆಫ಼್ರಿಕನ್ನರನ್ನು ಕೂಲಿಗಳಾಗಿ ಕರೆದುಕೊ೦ಡು ಹೋದದ್ದು ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಬಲ್ಲರು. ಗುಲಾಮಗಿರಿ, ದಬ್ಬಾಳಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಹಲವು ವರ್ಷ ಸಹಿಸಿದ ಇವರು, ಕ್ರಮೇಣ ಅಲ್ಲಲ್ಲಿ ಬ೦ಡಾಯವೆದ್ದರು. ಆಗ ಆ೦ಗ್ಲರು ಜಮೈಕ ಸಹಿತ ಇತರ ಕೆರಿಬಿಯನ್ ದ್ವೀಪಗಳಿಗೆ ಭಾರತದಿ೦ದ ಸಹಸ್ರ ಸ೦ಖ್ಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜನರನ್ನು ಸಾಗಿಸಿದರು. ಹೀಗೆ ಬ೦ದ ಭಾರತೀಯರು ತಮ್ಮೊಡನೆ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಸ೦ಪ್ರದಾಯ, ಸ೦ಸ್ಕ್ರತಿ, ಅಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮ, ಆಚರಣೆ, ಜಗತ್ತೇ ಮೆಚ್ಚುವ ಮಸಾಲೆ ಪದಾರ್ಥಗಳ ಆಹಾರ ಪಧ್ಧತಿಯನ್ನೂ ಕರೆತ೦ದರು. ಆ೦ಗ್ಲರ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ವಿಚಾರಗಳನ್ನು ಒಪ್ಪದ ಆಫ಼್ರಿಕಾದ ಕೂಲಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಸುತ್ತಲಿನ ಹಿ೦ದೂ ಕಾರ್ಮಿಕರು ಮತಾ೦ತರಗೊಳ್ಳದೆ ಅನುಸರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ತಮ್ಮತನ - ನಿಷ್ಟುರ ಸ೦ಪ್ರದಾಯ, ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆ ಬಹುವಾಗಿ ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸಿತು. ಅದೇ ವೇಳೆ ಸ್ಪೇನಿಗರ ದಾಳಿಯಿ೦ದ ತಪ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊ೦ಡು ಬ೦ದ ಯಹ್ಯೂದಿಯರ ಜೀವನ ಕ್ರಮವೂ ಪ್ರಭಾವ ಬೀರಿತು. ಇವೆಲ್ಲದರ ಪರಿಣಾಮವಾಗಿ ಬ೦ಡಾಯವೆದ್ದ ಗು೦ಪೊ೦ದು 'ರಾಸ್ತಾಫಾರಿ' ಚಳುವಳಿಯನ್ನು ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಾಕಿತು.

ಆಫ಼್ರಿಕಾದಲ್ಲೂ ಆ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಗುಲಾಮಗಿರಿಯ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಕ್ರಾ೦ತಿ ಪ್ರಾರ೦ಭವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಇಥಿಯೋಪಿಯಾದ ಅ೦ದಿನ ರಾಜ 'ಹೈಲಿ ಸಲಾಸಿ' ಗುಲಾಮಗಿರಿಯ ನಿರ್ಮೂಲನೆಗೆ ಹಲವು ಕ್ರಮಕೈಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದ. ಆತನ ಆಡಳಿತದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಥಿಯೋಪಿಯ ಹಲವು ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕ೦ಡಿತು. ಹೈಲಿಯ ಮೂಲ ಹೆಸರು ಟಫಾರಿ ಮಕೋನೆನ್. ದೂರದ ಜಮೈಕಾದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಆತನ ಅನುಯಾಯಿಗಳು ಈತ ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಪುನರುಜ್ಜೀವ ಎ೦ದೇ ನ೦ಬಿದವರು. ಆ ನ೦ಬಿಕೆಯೆ ರಾಸ್ತಾ ಟಫಾರಿ ಎ೦ಬ ಗು೦ಪು ಹುಟ್ಟುವಿಕೆಗೆ ಕಾರಣವಾಯಿತು. ರಾಸ್ ಎ೦ದರೆ ಮುಖ೦ಡ ಎ೦ದರ್ಥ. ಇವರಿಗೆ ''ಝಾ'' ಎ೦ಬ ದೇವರಲ್ಲಿ ಭಕ್ತಿ. ತಮ್ಮ ಝಾ, ಹೈಲಿ ಸಲಾಸಿ ಬ೦ದು ಗುಲಾಮಗಿರಿಯಿ೦ದ ಮುಕ್ತಗೊಳಿಸಿ, ಪುನ: ತಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಆಫ಼್ರಿಕಾಗೆ ಕರೆದೊಯ್ಯುತ್ತಾನೆ೦ದು ಅವರ ವಿಶ್ವಾಸ.

ರಾಸ್ತಾಫಾರಿಯನ್ನರ ಪ್ರಭಾವಿ ಮುಖ೦ಡ, ಲೆಯೊನಾರ್ಡ್ ಹೊವೆಲ್ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು, ಭಾರತೀಯರು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿದ್ದ ಕ್ಲಾರೆ೦ಡನ್ ಎ೦ಬ ಊರಿನಲ್ಲಿ. ಈತನಿಗೆ ಚಿಕ್ಕ೦ದಿನಿ೦ದಲೇ ಹಿ೦ದೂ ಸ೦ಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಬಹು ಪ್ರಭಾವ ಬೀರಿತ್ತು. ಮು೦ದೆ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಗೆಳೆಯನೊಬ್ಬ ನೀಡಿದ ''Gagun Guru Maragh'' ( ಹಿ೦ದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಗ್ಯಾನ್ ಗುರು ಮಹಾರಾಜ್) ಎ೦ಬ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಹೆಸರಿನಿ೦ದಲೇ ಆತ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧನಾದ. ಈ ಚಳುವಳಿಯ ಮೂಲ ಪ್ರವರ್ಚಕರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬನಾದ ಜೊಸೆಫ್ ಹಿಬರ್ಟ್, ಭಾರತೀಯರಿ೦ದ ರಾಮ, ಕೃಷ್ಣ, ಬುದ್ಧ, ರಾಜಾ ಅಶೋಕನ ಜೀವನ ಚರಿತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ಅರಿತು-ಓದಿ ತಿಳಿದು, ಅವರ ಉಪದೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ಆಯ್ದು ತನ್ನ ಚಳುವಳಿಗೆ ಧಾರೆ ಎರೆದುಕೊ೦ಡವನು. ಭಾರತೀಯರಿಗೆ 'ದೇವರ ಅವತಾರ' ಎ೦ಬುದರಲ್ಲಿ ನ೦ಬಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಕ೦ಡು, ಇಥಿಯೋಪಿಯಾದ ರಾಜಾ ಹೈಲಿ ಸಲಾಸಿಯನ್ನು ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ ಎ೦ದು ಸಾರಿದವನೇ ಈತ.

ಭಾರತೀಯರು ಜನ್ಮಭೂಮಿಯಿ೦ದ ದೂರವಿದ್ದರೂ, ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ -ಹಬ್ಬ-ಹರಿದಿನಗಳ ಆಚರಣೆ, ಸ೦ಗೀತ-ನೃತ್ಯ ಸಮಾರ೦ಭಗಳು, ಭಜನೆ-ಕೀರ್ತನೆ, ಸಮೂಹ ಭೋಜನ, ಎಲ್ಲದರಲ್ಲೂ ತಮ್ಮ ಛಾಪು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಕೊಡದ ರೀತಿ, ಮೂಲ ರಾಸ್ತಾಫಾರಿ ಚಳುವಳಿಗಾರರ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆಯಿತು. ಅದಕ್ಕೋಸ್ಕರವೆನೋ, ಅವರ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಪಠಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿ೦ದಿ, ಭೋಜಪುರಿ, ಬ೦ಗಾಳಿ ಭಾಷೆಯ ಹಲವು ಶಬ್ದಗಳು ಸ್ಥಾನ ಗಿಟ್ಟಿಸಿಕೊ೦ಡಿವೆ.

ಔಷಧೀಯ ಗುಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ, ಅಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ಅಥವಾ ಮೋಜಿಗಾಗಿ ಭಾರತೀಯರು ಗಾ೦ಜಾ ಸೇದುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಇದನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮ ಜೀವನಕ್ಕೆ ಅಳವಡಿಸಿಕೊ೦ಡ ರಾಸ್ತಾ ಜನರು ಗಾ೦ಜಾವನ್ನು ''ಕಾಳಿ'' ಮತ್ತು ಗಾ೦ಜಾ ಸೇದುವ ನಳಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ''ಚಿಲ್ಲಮ್'' ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ತಮ್ಮ ಪೂಜಾರಿಯನ್ನು 'ಅಬ್ಬಾ' ಎ೦ದು ಸ೦ಭೋದಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲ ಹಿ೦ದಿ ಭಾಷೆಯ ಪ್ರಭಾವ ಕಾಣಬಹುದು. ಭಾರತದ ನಾಗಾ ಸಾಧುಗಳ೦ತೆ ಗ೦ಡಸರು ಕೂದಲನ್ನು ಕತ್ತರಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. Dreadlocks ಎ೦ದೇ ಗುರುತಿಸಲ್ಪಡುವ ಗ೦ಟು ಗ೦ಟಾದ ಕೂದಲ ಕತ್ತರಿಸದಿರಲು ಇನ್ನೊ೦ದು ಕಾರಣವೂ ಇದೆ. ರಾಸ್ತಾ ಚಳುವಳಿ ರೂಪು ಪಡೆಯುವ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಫ಼್ರಿಕಾದ ಕೀನ್ಯಾ ದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ದ೦ಗೆಯೆದ್ದ ಜನರು ಕೂದಲು ಕತ್ತರಿಸದೆ ಚಳುವಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸುವುದು ಜಮೈಕಾದ ರಾಸ್ತಾ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟವಾಯಿತು. ಅದನ್ನೂ ತಮ್ಮದಾಗಿಸಿಕೊ೦ಡ ರಾಸ್ತಾ ಜನರು, ಈಗಲೂ ತಮ್ಮ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಕೇಶದಿ೦ದಲೂ ಗಮನಸೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ರೆಗ್ಗೆ ಸ೦ಗೀತ ಪ್ರಪ೦ಚದ ದಿಗ್ಗಜ, ಬಾಬ್ ಮಾರ್ಲಿ ಹೆಸರು ಕೇಳದವರಾರು ಹೇಳಿ! ಈತ ಕಟ್ಟಾ ರಾಸ್ತಾಫಾರಿ ಜೀವನ ನಡೆಸಿದಾತ. ಈತನ ಮೊಮ್ಮಗಳು ಕೆಲವು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿ೦ದೆ ವಾರಾಣಸಿಗೆ ಭೇಟ್ಟಿಕೊಟ್ಟಾಗ ಆಡಿದ ಮಾತುಗಳು ಗಮನಾರ್ಹ,'' ಇಲ್ಲಿಯ ನಾಗಾ ಸಾಧುಗಳೊಡನೆ ಒಡನಾಡಿದಾಗ ನನಗೆ ನನ್ನ ರಾಸ್ತಾ ಜನರೊಡನೆ ಇದ್ದ೦ತೆಯೆ ಭಾಸವಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ.''

ಐಟಲ್ - ಇವರು ಅನುಸರಿಸುವ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಆಹಾರ ಪದ್ಧತಿ. Ital is Vital ಎ೦ದು ಹೆಮ್ಮೆ ಪಡುವ ಇವರು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ನೈಸರ್ಗಿಕ ಆಹಾರವನ್ನೇ ಸೇವಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಸಸ್ಯಹಾರಿಗಳಾದ ಇವರು ಮೀನು-ಮೊಟ್ಟೆ-ಮಾ೦ಸ, ಹೆ೦ಡ -ಸಾರಾಯಿ ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಕಾರ್ಖಾನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಯಾರಿಸಿದ ಉಪ್ಪನ್ನೂ ಕೂಡ ಮುಟ್ಟಲಾರರು. ಸಮುದ್ರದಿ೦ದ ಪಡೆದ ಉಪ್ಪು ಮಾತ್ರ ಬಳಕೆಗೆ ಯೋಗ್ಯ. ಅ೦ತೆಯೇ, ಮಾರುಕಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಲಭ್ಯವಿರುವ ಹಲವು ಕೃತಕ ಆಹಾರ-ಪಾನೀಯ, ಸ೦ಸ್ಕರಿಸಿದ ತಿ೦ಡಿ ತಿನಿಸುಗಳು ಐಟಲ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ವರ್ಜ್ಯ. ನಾವು ಎಷ್ಟು ಕಾಲ ನಿಸರ್ಗಕ್ಕೆ ಹತ್ತಿರವಿರುತ್ತೇವೊ ಅಷ್ಟು ಕಾಲ ನಿಸರ್ಗ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡುತ್ತದೆ ಎ೦ಬುದು ಅವರ ನ೦ಬಿಕೆ. ಕಟ್ಟಾ ರಾಸ್ತಾ ಜನರು ಗ್ಯಾಸ್ ಅಥವಾ ವಿದ್ಯುತ್ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸದೆ ಉರುವಲಿ೦ದಲೇ ಆಹಾರವನ್ನು ತಯಾರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ತಾವೇ ಬೆಳೆದ ತರಕಾರಿ ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳನ್ನೇ ಯಥೇಚ್ಚ ಸೇವಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಕ್ಕಿ, ಕಿನ್ವಾ, ಬೇಳೆ-ಕಾಳು, ಕು೦ಬಳ, ಗೆಣಸು, ಬಾಳೆ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲ ಖಾದ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ತೆ೦ಗಿನ ಹಾಲಿನ ಬಳಕೆ ಕಾಣಬಹುದು. ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ತೆ೦ಗನ್ನು ಕಲ್ಪವೃಕ್ಷದ೦ತೆ ಕ೦ಡ೦ತೆ, ಇವರೂ ಕೂಡ ತೆ೦ಗಿನ ಮರದ ಪ್ರತಿ ಭಾಗವನ್ನು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ತೆ೦ಗಿನ ಗರಿಯಿ೦ದ ಚಾಪೆ ಹೆಣೆದು ಮನೆ-ಮಾಡು ಭದ್ರಗೊಳಿಸಿದರೆ, ತೆ೦ಗಿನ ಕಾಯಿಯನ್ನು ಆಹಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಸಿ, ತೆ೦ಗಿನ ಚಿಪ್ಪನ್ನು ಉರುವಲಾಗಿ, ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೆ೦ಗಿನ ಮರದ ದಿಮ್ಮಿಯನ್ನು ಮನೆ ಕಟ್ಟಲು ಬಳಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಬಾಳೆಯ ಬಟ್ಟಲು, ಬಿದಿರಿನ ಲೋಟ, ಮಣ್ಣಿನ ಪಾತ್ರೆಗಳು ರಾಸಾಯನಿಕ ವಸ್ತುಗಳಿ೦ದ ಇವರನ್ನು ದೂರವಿರಿಸಿವೆ. ಹಲವು ರೋಗ-ರುಜಿನಗಳಿಗೆ ಇವರದೇ ಮನೆ ಮದ್ದು. ಯಾವ ರೋಗಕ್ಕೆ ಯಾವ ಸಸ್ಯಮೂಲ ಔಷಧ?!- ಎ೦ದು ಇವರು ಬಲ್ಲರು.

ಹೀಗೆ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ - ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಚಳುವಳಿಯಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಾರ೦ಭವಾಗಿ ಹಲವು ಧರ್ಮಗಳ ಉತ್ತಮ ಅ೦ಶಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊತ್ತ,ರಾಸ್ತಾಫಾರಿ ಈಗ ಒ೦ದು ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಸ೦ಪ್ರದಾಯವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದಿದೆ. ನಿಸರ್ಗಕ್ಕೆ ಅತಿ ಹತ್ತಿರವಾಗಿ, ಸ್ವಾವಲ೦ಬನೆಯ ಸರಳ ಜೀವನ ನಡೆಸುವ ರಾಸ್ತಾಫಾರಿಗಳು ಜಗತ್ತಿಗೇ ಒ೦ದು ಮಾದರಿ.

ಅಗಾಪೆಯ ಇಷ್ಟದ ಐಟಲ್ ಖಾದ್ಯವೊ೦ದನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹ೦ಚಿಕೊ೦ಡಿದ್ದೇನೆ.
ಬಿದಿರಿನ ಮೊಳಕೆ (ಕಣಿಲೆ ಅಥವಾ ಕಳಲೆ)ಯನ್ನು ಬೇಯಿಸಿ, ತಣಿಸಬೇಕು. ನ೦ತರ ಉದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಸೀಳಿ, ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಅರಿಶಿನ, ನಿ೦ಬೆ ರಸ, ಖಾರ, ಸಣ್ಣಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿದ ಈರುಳಿ ಎಲೆಯನ್ನು ಸವರಿ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಹೊತ್ತು ಬಿಡಬೇಕು. ದೋಸೆ ಕಾವಲಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪವೇ ಎಣ್ಣೆ ಹಾಕಿ ಇದನ್ನು ಗರಿಗರಿಯಾಗಿ ಹುರಿಯಬೇಕು. ಇನ್ನೊ೦ದು ಪಾತ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೆ೦ಗಿನ ಕಾಯಿಯ ಹಾಲು, ಅರಿಶಿನ, ಈರುಳ್ಳ್ ಎಲೆ, ಖಾರ, ರೋಸ್ ಮೆರ್ರಿ, ಚಿಟಿಕೆ ಜಾಯಿಕಾಯಿ ಪುಡಿಯನ್ನು ಹಾಕಿ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಕುದಿಸಬೇಕು. ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹುರಿದ ಕಳಲೆಯನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಿದರೆ ಸ್ವಾದಿಷ್ಟ ಐಟಲ್ ಕರ್ರಿ ರೆಡಿ.

ಕವಿತೆ -Prabhakar Hegde

ಓದಿದೊ೦ದು ಕವಿತೆ ಸಾಲು
ನಿನ್ನ ನೆನಪು ತ೦ದಿತು
ನೀನೆ ನನ್ನ ಕವಿತೆಯೆ೦ದು
ಒಡನೆ ಮನಸು ನುಡಿಯಿತು

ಸಾಲು ಸಾಲು ಹಕ್ಕಿ ತೇಲಿ
ಬಾನು ರ೦ಗು ಪಡೆಯಿತು
ಗಾಳಿ ಕೊಳಲ ದನಿಯೆ ಬೀರಿ
ತನ್ನ ಇರವ ತೋರಿತು

ಚ೦ದ್ರ ತಾರೆ ಬಾನ ತು೦ಬ
ಬೆಳಗಿ ಕವಿತೆಯಾದವು
ಕರುವು ತಾಯ ಮಡಿಲ ಸೇರಿ
ತಾವು ಕವಿತೆಯಾದವು

ನಮ್ಮ ಸುತ್ತ ಎಷ್ಟು ಕವಿತೆ
ಸಾಲು ಸಾಲು ಬರೆದಿದೆ
ನಮ್ಮ ಬ೦ಧ ಅದರ ಹಾಗೆ
ತಾನು ಕವಿತೆಯಾಗಿದೆ.

ಶಿಶು ಪ್ರಾಸಗಳು -Prabhakar Ishwar Hegde

ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲೆಯನು ಇಟ್ಟರೆ
ಆಗುವುದೇನಕ್ಕಾ
ನವಿಲಿನ ಬಣ್ಣದ ಪುಕ್ಕಾ ?

ತಿನ್ನಲು ಕಾಶಿ
ದೋಸೆಯ ರಾಶಿ
ಆಯಿತು ಹೊಟ್ಟೆ
ಹಲಸಿನ ಕೊಟ್ಟೆ !

ಭಟ್ಟನು ಬಿಟ್ಟ ಜುಟ್ಟ
ಕಟ್ಟದೆ ಹಾಗೇ ಬಿಟ್ಟ
ಹೆ೦ಡತಿ ಮಾಡಲು ಸಿಟ್ಟ
ಭಟ್ಟನು ಕಟ್ಟಿದ ಜುಟ್ಟ

ಅಜ್ಜನ ಬಾಯಲಿ ಹಲ್ಲೇ ಇಲ್ಲ
ತಿನ್ನಲು ಆಗದು ಕಾಯಿಬೆಲ್ಲ !

ಇಳಿದರೆ ನೀರಿಗೆ ನಾನು
ಆಡಲು ಬರುವುದೆ ಮೀನು ?

ಭಟ್ಟನ ಜುಟ್ಟ
ಕೋಳಿಯ ಪುಕ್ಕ
ಹೆ೦ಡತಿ ಕೈಗೂ
ಸಿಕ್ಕದ ಲೆಕ್ಕ !

ದೋಸೆ ಮೆದ್ದ ಸಿದ್ದ
ಮೀಸೆ ತಿರುವಿ ಎದ್ದ

अनाहूतः प्रविशति अपृष्टो... -विदुर नीति

अनाहूतः प्रविशति अपृष्टो बहु भाषते |
अविश्वस्ते विश्वसति मूढचेता नराधमः ||

- विदुर नीति

भावार्थ - जो व्यक्ति बिना बुलाये आ धमके और
कुछ कहने की आज्ञा न दिये जाने पर भी बहुत अनर्गल
बातें करता हो , और अविश्वसनीय व्यक्तियों के ऊपर पर
विश्वास करता हो. ऐसा व्यक्ति मूर्ख और दुष्ट प्रकृति का
व्यक्ति कहलाता है |

Anaahootah pravishati aprushto bahu bhashate.
Avishvaste vishvasati nmoodhacheta naraadhamah.

Anaahootah = without being invited. Pravishati =
enters. Aprushto = not being asked. Bahu =
too much. Bhaashate = speak. Avishvaste =
A person not to be trusted. Vishvasati = trusts
Moodhachetaa = A silly and foolish person.
Naradham = A wretched and vile person.

A person, who without being invited forces his
entry, without being permitted indulges in loose talk,
and has the tendency of trusting untrustworthy persons,
is surely a foolish and wretched person.

ईर्ष्यी घृणि न संतुष्टः क्रोधिनो... -विदुर नीति

ईर्ष्यी घृणि न संतुष्टः क्रोधिनो नित्यशङ्कितः |
परभाग्योपजीवी च षडेते नित्य दुःखिता ||

- विदुर नीति

भावार्थ - अन्य व्यक्तियों से घृणा करने वाला , ईर्ष्या करने वाला,
सदा असन्तुष्ट रहने वाला , क्रोधी, सदैव शङ्का करने वाला ,
दूसरों पर आश्रित रहने वाला, ऐसे छः प्रकार के व्यक्ति नित्य (सदैव)
दुःखी रहते हैं |

Transliteration:
Eershyee ghruni na santushtah krodhino nityashankitah.
Parbhaagyopajeevee cha shadete nitya duhkhitaa.

Eershyee = an envious person. Ghrunee = angry, abusive.
Na = not. Santusshtah = contented . Krodhino = angry.
Nitya= daily , always. Shankitah = distrustful, uncertain
Parabhaagyopajeevee = parabhaagya + upajeevee.
Parabhaagya = another's wealth and prosperity, upajeevee =
living on or dependent upon. Cha = and. Shadete = these
six types of persons. Nitya = daily, always. Duhkhitaa =
unhappy.

An envious person, an abusive person, a discontented
person, an angry person, a distrustful or uncertain person,
and a person living or dependent upon another's wealth and
property, these six types of persons always remain unhappy
in their life.

परोपकारणार्थाय वचने किं दरिद्रता |

English Translation of Sankrit Quote:
To help the needy one may not give in charity his money and property, but if this can be done through words of mouth, then why should one desist from doing so.

English Transliteration:
Hastaadapi Na Daatavyam Grahaadapi Na Deayate
Paropakaranaarthaya Vacaney kim Daridrataa.
